How do you get rid of an unwanted critter? I have a big yard but it is completely fenced in with chain link fencing so that the dogs have no place where they can get out. This morning when I come downstairs DH says to me "There's a big rat in the recycling bin". So I go outside: Me, Noah, Kalina, Matilda, Sebastian, Gidget - all marching behind me. I take a peek and go back in to the house and say to DH "That is not a rat, you city slicker, that's a opossum". When I looked at it it hissed and bared it's needle teeth. I love animals, but that thing is ugly and it looked really sickley. I made DH take the recycling bin outside of the yard and dump out the critter, but it didn't run away at all it just stood there outside the gate and hissed at us. It was creepy. Now I am worried that it'll squeeze back into the yard and I'm afraid to let the kids out - especially since Kalina is going nuts at the door. She wants to fight it!:eek: I can't call animal control because I don't know where the darn thing is but I do know it seemed to be slow witted. Any suggestions? :( |
1 Attachment(s) Oh girl, we have the same problem...We always use a trap to get them away from the property. I worried about the urine and the possibility of a fight with my dogs. They had to go.... The fence will not keep them out. They will climb it with great ease.....Once they find a food source, which was our garbage, they will not leave on their own.....This is what we use.....You can call animal control once it's trapped..... |
We also have used the Have-a-heart traps and you just put either a can of cat food and/or tuna . . .they even were attracted to some peanut butter toast. Then we'd relocate them to a wooded area where there aren't homes. I think we've relocated about 5 possums in the past few years. They are pretty nasty and will hiss when you try to get the cage, so we usually tarp it or cover it with a large bag before we try to move the cage. It's less stressful for him as he cannot see what is going on. |
GREAT idea! I think my next door neighbor had one. I'm going to go borrow it right now!! Mucho gracia! :) |
