Any Macaw owners? Just wondering if anyone here owns one or has owned one? I've been researching them and really interested in getting one. Looking for first hand experience. We already have a green cheek and I just love him. Always been in love with the Macaw's. Thanks :D |
Nope never had one..but they look really cool! |
I wanted one, looked into and was saving for one when I read that they can bite so hard that you could need stitches. I didnt want to take that kind of chance I have a 10 yr old. Ive read its best a baby from a breeder that has hand feed. I love their looks though and decorate my gazebo with parrot decor |
Alaskayorkie - Mike has one. She is absolutely georgeous! |
They sure are gorgeous! It's been my dream to get one for a long time. We've had my green cheek for two years now and he is so sweet. I've taught him to dance and bob his head. He even says a few words. He is such a joy. I really love parrots. I've been bit by an amazon and it really wasn't "that" hard. It didn't hurt but he did draw a little bit of blood. I guess it's just a chance you take owning a large parrot. Although I've read the smaller ones are more nippy then large ones. Just gotta know how to handle them and it's always on their terms and what they are comfortable with. |
We have a blue and gold macaw and an amazon. My macaw rarely bites but if she does it's more of a nip than a bite. The amazon is another story. I can't even handle her any longer but my husband can. Some birds take to one person in the household and they're the only person the bird will tolerate. We used to have an african grey parrot who was quite the character and had a huge vocabulary. We hand fed all three of our birds when they were babies. |

Thanks for this info! I have been emailing today with a lady who is rehoming a 4 year old blue and gold macaw around here. She seems to rescue them and find them homes. This particular one lost her loved ones and has been moved around a bit. She says shes pretty friendly and loves to have body rubs. I'm going to talk with her more and maybe meet before hand. I told the lady if I do decide I would like to come meet her over the next couple weeks to see how she takes to us before we take her. She has plucked in the past. |
I have a big paper mache one hanging from a metal perch in my kitchen! Just for decoration and fun! That's about the only bird I'd willingly let IN my house! LOL They are beautiful though! |

LOL!!! :p I love parrots, they are fun companions that's for sure lol |
I have 3 African Greys, A Goffin's Too, and a blue quaker. All are talkers, with the exception of the rehomed AG, Toby. My greys like to try to 'confuse' me when they are all out of the cages by talking in each other's voices, as well as my hubby's and son's voices. I live in a house with a group of ventriloquists. grin |
Mom has one... Too bad you live so far. My mom has one she's trying to rehome because she's moving and can't take all of them... |
