The brutal sun is killing my plants on my deck... I have plants that require full sun, on my deck, and because it is so hot here, they are dying. I have replaced them three times since April! I water them every morning and evening, and mist them every morning, to no avail. Do you know of a flowering plant that can survive in temps in the very high 90s? A friend told me that she had to resort to silk plants...on her patio!!! |
I gave up on flowers on the deck and went to all evergreens. However, this year the intense sun and sweltering heat are taking a toll on my boxwood and Alberta spruce. :( I water every evening, but they still are getting scorched. |
I don't know what you've tried so far, but I usually have good luck with geraniums, petunias, alysum and of course marigolds for later this summer. We get very high temps 100+ in the summer and as long as I keep them well watered, and fertilized mine will survive even our summers. |
It gets HOT in Texas. I can't even keep petunias alive come July. I would suggest Lantana. It is awesome! I love it. It spreads beautifully and lasts thru the fall. :) |

My deck plants are having lots of trouble in this hot weather here in North Carolina. I have the best luck with geraniums and petunias. I have to water twice a day, too. Big pots that hold extra water really help. |
What about just getting a cactus garden? Those succulents come in very interesting shapes. |
I wish we could do petunias and geraniums, but only in the shade, and they won't last much longer. In the summer, the only plants I've found that will survive in pots in our heat/sun are Vinca's http://evilvince.com/wp-images/VincaFlowersBlog.jpg and Asparagus ferns http://www.shadyway.com/images/Aspar...prengeri-1.jpg will grow in Phoenix in a pot in the middle of summer. You don't have to daily water either. Of course succulents and cactus will grow, but I'm not a fan. |
I have marigolds and lantana in my back yard. It is sunny and hot out there and they are fine. |
Thanks for all of the feedback! I forgot to mention this, but I do have petunias and geraniums. Last year, they did fine, I even had to cut them back a little during the summer. The containers that I have actually fit (concave) on the railings of my deck. They're not really deep, but deep enough...for normal weather. I may pick up some lantanas today from Home Depot. This will be my forth and final effort. |
