Volunteer work at the census? I thought these were paid positions? Regardless, this is sick! In my area, Census workers travel in groups, or pairs so they regulate themselves and protect themselves. Think, what if this was a female census worker walking into a home of a complete sicko. Some people make me absolutely sick!!

I also thought it was a paid position, I don't know.

I would NEVER let anyone in my house without a search warrant.. Nor would I go into houses if I were a census taker. I am not sure they are even supposed to. Guess I will go read the guidelines.

This guy came back though, how scary is that? I am a card carrying NRA member and I do carry a gun as well (trained). But if someone sneaks in while your asleep it's already to late.

Of course my dogs would wake me.. My best friend is deaf and she would never hear her dog bark.. It is just scary!

But can you believe this dude left his pants and wallet behind? he wasn't very drunk at .03.. legal limit is .08 which is barely any alcohol..

He was totally naked and walked home that way. WTF is wrong with this man???

I'm guessing you're right, they are not suppose to enter the home, just ask the questions from outside.

Which is why I keep a big bat near my front door not that it would do any good against a gun

I love that we have a security screen door with double deadbolt locks. I leave the big door open but have the security door locked. I can see anyone walking up but they can't see me until they get right up to the door. It's a nice barrier. I love getting fresh air without feeling like I'm at risk. And you can't open this door with a pen! :D

I am currently an enumerator for the Census in my area and we do not travel in pairs. We go out alone and I have a few "horror stories" of my own. They do not recommend to go into people's homes but if you feel safe and the person invites you in, it is ok... its up to your discretion. I have been in a couple. There are no volunteering positions, all are paid and there are background checks. The only thing on the site that it said to look for in a Census worker to verify that I do not do is carry my shoulder bag. The houses I go to are far apart so I drive and its too much of a hassle to get my bag out at every stop but its always in my car, other than that... I do everthing else.

I have met some interesting people so far...

My bf works for the census too. He started as an enumerator and has now been promoted twice. (pays the same though) He doesn't have time for me anymore. :rolleyes: I haven't had a chance to ask him about this stuff.

Well after all it is the media who wrote "volunteer", but it is a temporary job for MOST of the census takers. I would hang on that word to much.

Even though they do background checks on these people it doesn't mean a heck of a lot unless they are actually convicted felons. This particular man had no record.

I try to be as careful as possible. I will be honest and say that I did have one time so far where I thought my well being was at stake and I think if I stayed one minute longer, I would've had rocks thrown at me. :rolleyes:

I live in the heart of eastern KY and there are SO many anti-government people who feel as though the government does not care about the poor people (although they have NO problems getting a check, food stamps, free health care, etc from it). This particular house was right next door to where my hubby recently busted a marijuana grow operation in the kids' playhouse out back (later to find out they are all relatives) so it was obvious they did not want anyone "snooping" around their house for certain reasons. When I mentioned I was with the Census, their faces (a man and woman) were filled with rage and they instantly started using obsencities and were threatening me. I was so shaken up that when I was in my car (driving to back out of a long gravel road on the side of a hill) that I could not breathe which led to me not being able to feel my hands, which panicked me even more. I had immediately called my hubby b/c I was scared to death. Those people were just MEAN to me. :mad: He helped calm me down and breathe so I could back out of their driveway and he met me a few mins later at the bottom of their hill and that's when we pieced everything together on who they were.

I have also had my front bumper and fog light torn off when I was way out in the middle of nowhere b/c a lot of people live out in the sticks. I was stuck out there on a dirt road for almost 2 hours. Luckily, I had cell phone service and I was able to call my hubby who was at dispatch to find out where I was (just in case). I was able to get my bumper temporarily back on (had to take apart my fog light though) until I could take it into the shop the next day (this was all financially out of my pocket). I get 50 cents for every mile so that is supposed to cover insurance on your car, etc but I still think its a dud b/c the ONLY reason I was in this place was for work and I think someone should have done their research and given that area of the county to someone with a truck or bigger vehicle (I just have a car).

Another time I was parked on a hill and I had just a little bit of gas and the way my car was tilted, it thought it was out of gas.... so I had to bum gas off of the people who (luckily) had some leftover from their lawnmover...

the list goes on... :rolleyes: I feel like I am one of those people that things just always and naturally occur to them... :rolleyes:

OMG....scary situations, glad you got out of there okay!

I know 50 cents a mile doesn't even begin to cover your expenses as far as wear and tear on you car. My son is a rural postal carrier, and the mileage allowance is a joke, if gas goes up this summer like it is supposed to, he will be almost paying to do his job:(

And, around here you couldn't pay me enough to be a census worker. Meth labs are not uncommon in the backwoods here and those people's brains are so fried, they really are scary delusional.

That sucks!! I agree 50 cents for each mile? With gas prices the way they are that's a joke. BF drives a V8 Mustang and we live in traffic jam central. I don't know how he's making any money off that job.
