Oil Spill Disaster I don't know if anyone other than our Gulf Coast YT'ers are keeping a close eye on the news, but the oil spill out in the Gulf of Mexico is about to change the lives of millions of folks in several states. Our beaches are known for the sugar white quality and our economy in my county, at least, is almost totally dependent on tourism. The wetlands and esturaries are the nurseries for fish, shrimp, waterfowl and many other creatures. These will be affected even more so than just gunked up sand. I pray that the clean up effort will contain this pollution, but I'm afraid that life as we know it down here will be a thing of the past. Please say a prayer for us! |
It is very sad :( I so hope they can clean it up. I heard that they thought there were 5,000 gallons a day and realized it was like 200,000 a day! uugghhh :( Its horrible! |
I have been watching it on the news. I am praying that they are able to contain it and stop it from hitting the coast. |
I am surprised that when they build the rigs, and start the drilling, there is no detonator device below ground to blow to stop the gushing. It will eventually be fixed, the famange will be done, the clean up will commence, and I would not want to be a stock holder of the Oil Company because ultimately they are responsible. |
I work for an oil distributor, and this is devastating in so many ways. It will affect everyone in our country if not directly, indirectly. The cost of this disaster will be passed off to the consumer. Since the explosion we have only seen slight increases in prices but today the markets are taking a more drastic jump. My heart goes out to the people involved in clean up efforts, the animals, the gulf cost economy, everyone close to this mess. I am afraid the worst is yet to come. |
Saying my own prayers!! I hope they can get the oil to stop gushing. I just can't imagine there wasn't a system in place already to correct the slick from spreading...or a plan B inplace to stop a pipe leak a mile under water??? I mean they were able to "lay" the pipes that far under, did they not think of a pipe blowing up or one springing a leak??? |
Oh.....and the poor men on that rig! :( One of my friend's husband was on the rig when it exploded, but, fortunately, he was unhurt; physically. Emotionally, he's a nervous wreck. And they've had to unplug their phone. The news reporters and money hungry lawyers won't leave them alone. And the other poster was right, it will affect all of us in one way or the other. :( |

This spill could be a real disaster but so far the effect on land has been minimal. I don't think that will be true in a few more days. The wind has been up out of the south and the seas are choppy so containment isn't working very well. Our shrimp season opened early so that shrimpers could go out and get all they could while they could. There's been a run on the seafood markets. This couldn't have happened at a worse time. It's spawning season and there's so many young fish, birds, turtles and other wildlife that won't stand a chance. There's been a lot of talk here about why there are no resources in place for just this kind of thing. With all the drilling in the Gulf and the risks to the environment, something like this was bound to happen. Very sad in many ways. |
I'm glad someone mentioned this. We've been watching tageschau in my german class for the last week and they talk about this spill every day. it's horrendous!!! and they're saying it could spread up the east coast. :( This is hurting so many people. It could ruin lives if it gets any worse. I know Jersey is going to have a big problem if it spreads up north because most of our money comes from summer tourists who visit the shore. Reading the stories on the news about like 3rd generation fishermen and people like that made me want to cry. There's got to be something that can help these people! and those poor animals :( |
