Painting over wallpaper? I live in an old farmhouse, and finally we are going to redo the kitchen. My husband is pretty handy and its so expensive we are doing alot of the work ourselves. 3/4 the kitchen walls are down to studs for drywall, but there is a section that is fine structurally, but OMG!!! Its been 30 yrs since this kitchen has been remodelled and it has 4 layers of wallpaper!! I used this good stuff and 3 layers came off no problem. But the 4th layer is like its part of the wall!!!!!! actually absorbed into it or something. If i try to get it off maybe a teeny tiny piece will come off, but thats it. I want it to look nice when its done, is it possible to sandpaper the wall smooth since this stubborn stuff wont come off and it still look good? Anyone heard of this being done? THought Id take a shot at someone here knowing. |
paper removal The walls were probably not sized before the first coat was put on. Is the wallpaper a vinyl or a vinyl coated. Did you try spraying it with hot water, waiting a few minutes and then trying to remove it? You can paint over the wallpaper. You need to spackle and sand any areas that are not smooth. Are the seams smooth or overlapped? Once the walls are smooth you need to prime the walls with Kilz primer. Then you can paint. |
Thank you!!! No this stuff must be the first wallpaper to come out...........LOL Its just like paper really. No sheen, very thin. A small bit of overlapping, but its so thin it barely makes a bump. ANd your right, the chemical doesnt work like warm water on this stuff. I just tried it. Seriously its almost like notebook paper. SHould I scrub it off, cause it wont peel at all?? OR sand paper and try the primer? |

I think I just made a decision.... BECAUSE I DONT THINK I CAN TAKE OFF ONE MORE LAYER OF WALLPAPER. Ill sand it as smooth as I can, use the primer, and see how smooth painting looks, if it looks bad.......Ill texture it!! THanks again...........I just didnt know if painting over it was possible. |
If you really want it to look as good as the rest of your remodeled kitchen, go to the extra trouble to get that wallpaper down. Use a steamer and scrape, then sand, then prime. If you don't have a steamer of any kind, keep up with a rag dipped in hot water. I have been through this in old houses many times. It's a drag, but the results are worth the extra effort. |
You are a life saver!! Im gonna try all of it!! IM so glad you said DONT REMOVE IT! NOw I need to get those supplies. Gess Im not very good at this remodeling. LOL....I just saw your post Max, and Im sure my husband would agree! HE TOLD ME YOU WILL NOT NOT NOT PAINT OVER WALLPAPER> BUt IM serious this stuff is unbeleiveable! |

I had the very same problem! What i did was sand, sand, sand the existing paper, then primed w/ Kilz primer then painted the whole thing with a taupe colored paint. After that it did not look right to me so i sponged on some paint a bit lighter and a bit darker and blended. it took me some time to get it right! You could still see the seems a little bit but it ended up looking like textured wall paper. Every body just thought it was really expensive Ralph Lauren wall paper! Also there is a really thick wall paper called anaglyptica. it comes in all sorts of textures it goes up really easy(lots easier than regular wall paper!) It is white and you paint it any color you want. You can get it just about anywhere that sells wall paper. Keep us posted on your progress. Send us pictures of you project!:) |

I wanted to give up so many times, but the extra effort was worth it in the end. |

Use an electric sander to get all of that wall paper off, then clean the wall really well. Be sure it's completely dry before painting. We went thru that when we bought this house. |
After you removed or partially removed the paper be sure to use a PVA drywall primer to seal the wall before painting. After all your hard work it's worth spending an extra few bucks on a quality mat finish which will hide any imperfects and it's washable should it get dirty. Enjoy your project! |
