silly question, advice needed What type of fabric do you think a real life superhero would use for his or her cape? I'm serious. I'm making a power girl costume for a client and am stuck on what fabric to use on the cape. I do high end stuff, so no shiny lycra stuff. I was thinking velvet. Would a superhero have a velvet cape? This is an old school character, so no leather batman type stuff. any ideas? |
Well I always prefer my ole polyester capes.:p Just kiddin wit-cha! I think the velvet idea is Fabulous! |
How about a crushed panne? It's velvety and yet a bit different. I saw a gold color one that I thought was gorgeous! |
Velvet would be gorgeous, but it wouldn't survive any superhero action or bad weather. This is a challenge. |
Hmmm.....a cape is supposed to billow out behind a superhero, right? Velvet might be too heavy, what about silk? Are there old school superheros? |
Satin on the outside and velvet animal print fabric on the inside with the letter being the velvet animal print on the satin outside...you could always bling out the letter with crystals all the way around the edge! Can you tell I have done this before? LOL. |
I can take a picture and email it to you! I designed it for a friend (long story) and had my seamstress make it to my specifications! The cool thing was after its superhero use was over she is now able to use it as a very fabulous throw! It was stunning and so fun! Hot pink satin on the outside, hot pink and black velvet leopard print on the inside...the letter was the velvet animal print on an upside down black satin triangle (like superman) and the letter was piped in hot pink swarovski crystals! FABO! |
I made a costume for my son once, and that was the hardest part of the project, it's really hard to get the cape to look like it could aid in flying. I wasn't even that happy with the Superman cape in the film. The weight of the fabric seems important, velvet could look vampirey instead of superheroey. Could you get swatches and let her choose? |
2 Attachment(s) That's what i was thinking that velvet may be too heavy. I found some really nice velvet, but the red is not "red" enough. silk may work, but would wrinkle too much. This is the costume, see how the live action one, it looks all cheesy, I don't want it to look like that. The rope I'm using a very thick upholstery/drapery cording, and the medallion is a disc covered in metallic lambskin. I just don't know what to use for the cape!!! I asked my client, and I both hate it and love it when they just say, "I trust you, do whatever", but then they don't really give me input. |
What's that superhero's power? Drowning villains in breast milk? |

I have seen real movie costumes upclose. They are on display often at my old school's museum. They are not as awesome as you would think. Lots has to do with camera lighting and effects. For example, the first Elizabeth movie. the jewels on her gowns were plastic! But in the movie they can tweak it to look like real jewels. In real life we don't have that option (unless you count beer goggles) so in essence, my costumes have to look better than the movie ones bc we don't get to use special effects. This is particularly difficult for me, bc I usually don't work with knits, and I like doing stuff from the victorian era, and superheros stuff is just another world to me. |
