I am looking for some National Statistics for boarding and caring for yorkies. My accountant asked if I had this information so that I might be able to take something off my taxes. My kids are grown and now we have no tax deductions. I figure since I foster at least 4 yorkies at a time during the year I could use some of that for a deduction. But I can't find any stats on caring for these little toots. If anyone has this information or might know where I could find it, I would sure appreciate it.

Thank you for posting this information. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for either! ;) My tax lady said that with me fostering, and generally I have at least 3 fosters at a time, it could help me on my taxes. Since the kids are grown we don't have any deductions and I HATE having to pay more money! I will take these to the accountant and see if this helps her with my taxes. Thanks again!

this would be a first that I have heard of. I mean, I have spent thousands at vets for my dogs, but even though it is a medical expense, things for a pet have never been tax deductible as far as I have ever heard. Especially fostering which is a voluntary thing..

I could see where expenses for our own pets are not deductible. But, if the rescue she is working with is a 501c3, and her expenses for foster dogs are not reimbursed, would those not be deductible?

I really don't know.. but somehow I doubt it. I am sure the RESCUE itself can take some deductions for expenses... but a volunteer worker.. I highly doubt.

Well, I definitely am not an accountant or CPA but just doing what was suggested. Yes, this rescue does have their 501c3. I am on the board as well as fostering. My logic in this is that why would it be any different than any other non-profit organization? We have at least 2 events per month that I transport dogs to, I travel to shelters, pick up surrenders, do transports, travel to vet appts (which I might add that I live 25 miles from them so is at least a 50 mile round trip), let alone make donations to the rescue by paying for things the doggies need that the rescue might otherwise not be able to provide. I really didn't mean to create a discussion about any of this. Guess I will try it and see what happens. If I am the one to get audited I can let you all know not to do it! :D Thank you to those that gave me some of the links. I will provide that information to my CPA and go from there.

Jen, I think you know exactly what I do and what is involved and Thank you for your input. No, I would never claim anything that I provide for my personal dogs. But having anywhere from 3-4 fosters at a time and all the traveling that I do might be somthing to look into. Oh and BTW, I still have little Roxy and have become very attached to her. It has taken forever to get her healthy but she is on the road now. She is feeling so much better now that she has begun to play with the others even with those bad legs. :)

You seem upset. I hope you didn't take offense to anything I said. That was certainly not my intension. Like I said, "I don't know" but I doubted it.

i wonder if you can do it as a donation to the 501c is how she is doing it as that is definitely a write off so is the 501 giving you a donation form to write of expenses since you are fostering for them? I have done this before as demi was a write off as i rescued her and that is considered a donation I believe at least that is what my accountant told me so maybe that is how she is treating it under gifts and donations.

also just like using your home as an office when you sell the house they back that out later on so make sure to check that out as i have a home office but do not deduct as too much hassle when you sell your home just a thought

As a volunteer with an organization with their 510c3 you can deduct milage, food, supplies..

I have done this for years. You will only need to have the tax id number of the organization. (I think it was the tax id #)

The milage saved us one year. We had over 1500 miles in transportation for them.
