Has Anyone Started Seeds For Their Garden Yet? I am a garden-aholic and was just curious if anyone else is making plans for a garden this year; and if so, what are they starting from seed, or planting in their garden. I have just started, " blue and yellow snow pea seeds" from the cooks garden in peat pots. I plan on them being out first, near the beginning of May. Near the end of April I will start everything else in peat pots. |
We STILL have little patches of snow on the ground despite the fact it was 50 degrees today! So no...I haven't started our garden yet. When I do, it's minimal because we have perennial beds in the front & back (thank you to the people who lived here before us!) but I did see the daffodils poking through the brown of the dead grass and leaves today and it made me smile! I always do a pot of something bright like petunias or impatiens near the front door, but we have tulips in a row there too. In the back, I like to do a pot of herbs so I can grab them quick off the deck while I'm cooking. I will also plant one of each of a bush tomato, a grape tomato, and a cherry tomato, plus a banana pepper, a bell pepper, all from little plants I buy. I will probably attempt snap peas & morning glories together again-it's a pretty combination climbing up a trellis :) I planted cosmos seeds for a couple years and now I don't have to plant them anymore because I have perpetual volunteers that keep coming back :) |
2 Attachment(s) When I was in my house - I had a garden for a few years and loved it...it's work but man there is nothing like homegrown veggies - Tomatoes - green beans - peppers and my beautful sunflowers - I really really miss having a yard - not only for my 2 yorkies - but just because I could grow my own food..... This was a pic my husband took in the sunflowers - I've always loved them...then Chanel looking for a way to stomp the green beans |

We are in Texas so it is warm enough to put out our early plants right now! I just harvested the last of my cauliflower and broccoli. I have sage, rosemary, cilantro and oregano from last year. I'm going to put out my tomatoes and peppers this weekend! |
I fell in love with gaillardias last year so I am ordering seeds to start as well as plants. The flowers last ALL Spring and Summer long! Gaillardia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

I was going to start tomato plants and marigolds this past weekend but had unexpected family come into town and was not able to get anything done that I'd planned. :( I am determined to have a small veggie garden this year. I just love fresh tomatoes. |
Have any of you grown tomatoes or strawberries in those upside down containers? They look appealing to me! |
I plan on doing a garden this year that I have a yard now! I am so excited for home grown veggies :D |

We must have been mentally connected!;) I bought some more peat pots and planted more tomatoes and eggplants and herbs this past weekend. Ohhhh.... I agree with you totally, nothing like fresh tomatoes , throw in some basil and balsamic and you are good to go!:D Last year, I had a very small 6' by 12' area for planting, and you would not believe all the tomatoes I got from that small space. Not to mention salad greens for the whole summer, basil, thyme, & peppers. It was amazing what came out of that little space! Sorry you could not get yours going, but there is always this weekend!! |
I just started my seeds in doors so far just parsley peppers & lettuce. just wanted to warm people alot of things are very dangerous to dogs SO check before planting. I know tomato plants are Number 1. |

I personaly don't like the upside down tomatoes they seem to collect some kind of residue on the bottoms lol maybe I just did it wrong I love to plant in fact have started the sun flowers and pumpkins with the kids inside already but I just am not very good at it My answer is just plant lots and hope some make it |

I have always read that it is the green parts of the tomato plant that contain Solanine, which is the toxin. The fruit itself is ok as it seems to metabolize the chemical in its maturation process, but you are right, there are sooooo many things that we take for granted in the garden that are poisonous to our pups. I just love having your own lettuce around! Especially when you are paying $4 and $5 for it in the grocery store! LOL:rolleyes: This year I have a mesculin mix that looks pretty interesting that I got from Seeds of Change. Cannot wait to see what it does. |

:yelrotflmI LOVE your philosophy! That works for me! I just love sunflowers, they are like the friendliest flower imo: easy to plant and a fantastic show when it grows! |
