The 2010 Olympics Well Im here....I have & I am still watching the opening Olympics- but even though they are taking place in Canada.....I have to say I still have to watch the American Coverage if I want to enjoy the Olympics. Why does Canada always insist on showing the past, the old, the negative.....I dont get it....so again I am stuck watching NBC for coverage: not only because it is in HD with out having to pay for it.....like we do in Canada....like we have to pay for everything........ |
and again we are waiting for the things to rise.....what a screw up!!!!! |
and I was hoping they would light the flame with the light of Terry Fox.......but not to happen....Wayne Gretsky is awesome....& I love the guy & his family..... |
I personally was very disappointed about wayne lighting the flame but oh well. Also Nelly's singing, it looked like she was at a bull fighting instead of the Winter Olympics, but loved the rest of the show. Go Canada!!!! |
I have to say, I love the Olympics! I have great memories of watching them growing up! I was disappointed with the opening ceremonies though. I thought there were some good hi-lights, but I felt like a lot of it dragged and was kind of boring! I love Canada though, I went for the first time this past summer and I was so impressed at how friendly the people were! It was so pretty too!! Even the guards at the border who stopped me and had me come in for questions were nice! :D (I forgot to sign my passport) Let the games begin!! |
:animal-paHi Reese You werent alone in the disappointment arena....I know my husband was with you on the disappointment of the opening ceramonies as well. I on the other hand....go with the flow for many things. I understand why they had the Indians doing the opening show....if you lived here...you might understand as well......its still very political....& like they say who ever holds the biggest stick when it comes to Votes....usually holds the most power....I think thats how it works. As for Nelly.....well- I dont really consider her "Canadian" so to speak. She makes it quite clear in her music of what she thinks about all things "Canadian". She hates Steve Nash(our Famous Basketball Player), & I believe the song she sang at Princess Diana's Birthday for her sons was a disgrace.......but enough about that .......I do wish they had Bryan Adams sing alone....& as for Wayne lighting the torch....You have to understand that Canada is very much about HOCKEY- from the time we are born until the time we leave this earth....we are entrenched with Hockey even as Women- I have many girlfriends who played seriously- I played as a kid.....& Wayne is the Ultimate Sportsman - hockey player that Canada has ever had....so hence the reasoning behind picking him. His father who lives in Brantford, which is like 35 minutes away from me, does alot of good for kids that are poor around here & they help the community around here big time. Wayne comes from some great blood lines. So thats why they picked him. Would you have a better suggestion? Anyways, I was quite impressed with the way NBC talked about Canada & the USA. I know this evening when I was watching Speed Skating I was going for Apollo & the other American skater his name escapes me at this moment:all the while there was a Canadian in the running. And for the womens mogul skiing, I knew the American should have won the gold & she did. So in ending this long winded speech...I hope you enjoy the games, & I hope one day you can visit Canada & see if for all of its beauty!!!! Cheers Penny |

Were you talking to me perhaps, as I was the one talking about Nelly and wayne? I grew up in Calgary and very much know our history with Canada and hockey. I have even met wayne a couple of times. I won't go further with what I personally think of him. I really wanted Terry Fox's mom to light the final torch but I was glad in the end it was wayne as I can't imagine her in the back of a pick-up in the rain for 10 minutes. I much perfered wayne for that. :D |

I guess I actually felt they had some good ideas, but didn't capitalize on them! I do understand about the Indians, I just feel they could have made it more exciting. I was in B.C this past summer. I was in Penticton, my brother competed in the Ironman triathlon. I thought it was beautiful and the people were so friendly! An example, I went to a bank to exchange money, we didn't have any change for the parking meters. I asked the teller if she knew how much the meters were and she didn't know. The bank manager overheard us and ran out of the bank and went across the street to check the meters and came back to tell me! I thought that was so nice! I love Bryan Adams, he was my very first concert when I was 13 years old. I really don't know anything about Nelly, I just watched her on an old episode of CSI. I figured that Wayne would be the one, I totally get that and I know hockey is HUGE there! I loved the talk about Canada/USA as well, that was nice! I was so excited that Apolo metaled last night, he's just such an awesome athlete! Though I was glad they advanced the Canadian skater since he was knocked out by another skater earlier on. I was thrilled for J.R. Celski who took the bronze, he was the skater that suffered the nearly deadly cut back in Sept.! The women's moguls were exciting and it was nice that it was USA/Canada finished on top, hopefully that will be a theme in the Olympics!! |
Just curious what do ya'll mean about understanding why they had the Indians doing the opening show? |

I personally think it was just a bit overdone. If you know NOTHING about Canada and only watched the opening ceremonies you'd think Canada was only First Nations and full of snow. |

So, are the protesters natives? We watched and really enjoyed the opening ceremony for the most part. There were a few parts that got a little boring for my taste. I thought the effects on the floor were awesome though! I loved the whale scene. I got the impression this was a tribute to the natives of Canada. |

I suppose it could have also been a tribute- weren't the effects on the floor too cool? |
Okay. I had thought about the protesting and such. I was just talking about that with my mom the other night. My cousin is a hoop dancer and was part of the opening ceremonies. She said it was very cool. |
