The Lovely Bones So I just finished reading The Lovely Bones, and I'm really upset. I'll admit it was a thrilling book, which is how I read it in three days, but I'm really pissed about the ending. **SPOILER ALERT!!** Please don't keep reading if you haven't read the book or seen the movie and you don't want to know what happens. So the entire book you're waiting for this big climactic ending, thinking that the dad is going to avenge his murdered daughter, or at the very least they'll discover her body (or bones) and lay it to rest. The ending was the worst, like the endings of the Stephen King books. With such a depressing novel, you NEED some kind of closure, and she just leaves you hanging. I mean, come one, the guy dies because some snow falls on him??!! That's not justice!! Does anyone else feel like I do? How can they make a movie about this?? He raped her and cut her up into little pieces! AARRRGGGHHHHH!! |
I have to agree with you. I haven't read the book but DID see the movie the other night. I LOVED the movie. I thought it was well done and really stirred my emotions. But I was very disappointed about the direction it ended up going in the end. All that building you up with the searching, puzzle pieces...etc..and for what? I mean, in the movie, her sister ends up giving her grandma the book of plans she found for the trap he built and the lock of her hair and newspaper clippings and things...and they DO show the police at the home of the killer investigating it...but by then he is long gone! I left the theater with a big ole "What The Flip????" on the tip of my tounge~ |
*FULL OF SPOILERS* I agree 100000%!!! I fell in love with the book - I read the entire thing yesterday. but when I got to the ending I was like "....and then what happened!?!?!" it was RIDICULOUS. The whole ice cicle killing George Harvey was laughable - a complete cop-out, probably cause she wrote herself into a corner and couldn't figure out how to make it work. I think when it got to the whole fall-out-of-Heaven-and-have-sex thing, I kind of gave up. But up until that point I was purely captivated! |
While I agree with the anti-climatical nature of the ending, I think it was done so that nobody innocent destroyed their lives. Think of the lives that would be ruined if the dad sought justice. I was really surprised how well the movie was done though. Movies are never as good as books, but I have to give that movie some credit:) |
I haven't seen the movie - looks too disturbing and I love to read but wouldn't have read the book for the same reason. I felt the same way about the movie Message in a Bottle. I then read the book hoping something was left out and that there would be more closure. Nope. Excellent movie, excellent book until the ending. Why do they do that? They have you on the edge of your seat and then they drop you. |
The movie was really good but I did not read the book |
Agreed - which is why I have absolutely no desire to see the movie! |
It looks like a good movie but I don't get the name...what is the reason for Lovely Bones? |

I have no idea! So much of the book is them just trying to slove her murder, and find her bones (???). But there's nothing lovely about the last five chapters of the book, after it completely goes into another direction! But, if I'm this dissapointed with the book, I'm skipping the movie and saving myself the $80.00 (2 adult tickets, snacks, and a babysitter for three kids!!)! |

I was thinking the same thing about the ending when I read the book. I was hoping the sinkhole would've burped out the safe. |
I think the idea was life goes on...People go missing everyday...People die in 'accidents' such as icicles everyday. That's life. We don't know what's behind the scenes. IMO, it was about life. Not death, but life. The issue with the movie was it focused on Susie being dead. The book focused on Susie's family dealing with her being dead. |
As always, the book was way better!!!! I enjoyed the movie, and just had to see it the day it came out, but as always, I left disappointed! I thought the movie may have the twist we we were looking for, and the "odd" girl that felt Suzie's presence would somehow notify authorities about the safe in the sinkhole, since the man dumping it gave her the heebie jeebies, but no dice!!! Oh well, if you haven't read the book yet, do it, and save yourself from the movie! |
I have heard the movie is not very good by some people, then I've heard other people say it was great. |

"These were the lovely bones that had grown around my absence: the connections - sometimes tenuous, sometimes made at great cost, but often magnificent - that happened after I was gone. And I began to see things in a way that let me hold the world without me in it. The events that my death wrought were merely the bones of a body that would become whole at some unpredictable time in the future. The price of what I came to see as this miraculous body had been my life." |
