Getting cigarette smoke out of clothes and fabrics?

Alright, so I live with a chain smoker and every time I leave the house, I smell like cigarette smoke. Never touched the things in my life, but it smells like I smoke a pack a day. I keep all my clothes in a small closet, and the door is closed almost 24/7. No matter how much perfume I use, or how much incense/candles I burn, it just doesn't help.

My significant other and I went over to a friends house only to hear his mother say "Phew, who smells like cigarette smoke?" I shouldn't be so sensitive about it, it's just something I've had to live with for so long.

Does anybody know a good way to nip this in the bud? Maybe something with a strong smell I could put in my closet or something I could spray on myself before I leave the house? I'm about willing to try anything.

I quit smoking in Feb of 06, and all I can say is this is a very difficult thing to do. The most reliable is plain News Paper in your closet but this needs to be changed about 2 times a day the paper absorbs the smell. This is the best advice I can offer you. I have painted my house, put down wood floors and I still think I smell it once in a while.

Good Luck

Wow, I've never heard of that! Thank you for the suggestion. I'll definitely try that.

You are welcome, thats what I did for all of my purses

Febreeze

The only true way of getting it out is to not have it there in the first place. Why not ask the other person to go outside or better yet to quit all together? I have been quit for 3 years but when I smoked I went outside cause my DH had quit and didnt like it. My mother also smokes outside. I had smoked for over 25 years and I did it. I cant stand the smell now. I had no idea how bad it was till I quit. I few weeks ago I went into an icecream place and had a sample but couldnt taste the icecream for the smell from the spoon the lady gave me. She had smoked and never washed her hands after so when she touched the spoon it made it smell like it. I never knew how bad it was till I quit.

Rall 11-24-2009 06:54 PM

Furbreeze? I think I tried that when I was younger, but I can't remember how well it worked. Worth a try again since I don't remember it failing, though.

And, as much as I'd love for her to quit altogether, I can't ask a person not to smoke inside when they rightfully own the house... She's a senior citizen and has tried to quit about 4 or 5 times before. I love her dearly, and wish she would quit, but we don't bother her about it anymore... My boyfriend told me bluntly I probably won't get away from it until we get a place of our own. I hated the thought of that, but I'm starting to think he's right...

Charcoal will absorb smells, Open a bag of charcoal and sit it in your closet.

ladyjane 11-24-2009 08:12 PM

Eco-88
Eco-88- pet odor and pet stain remover. Guaranteed!

Incredible stuff! I once received a package of dog clothes and could not wash some of them because of the fabric. I put them in a bag and sprayed Eco-88 lightly. You do have to be careful with some colors.

Before I got rid of my carpets I used that for tough stains...it was unbelievable!

It is guaranteed!

You might want to try a air purifier in your room and a filtrete filter in the air/heat unit, as the smoke will travel into your room via the duct system. I feel sorry for you, because not only will it be on your clothes but your hair and skin as well. I cannot stand that smell! Cannot understand in this day and time, with all the research on how bad it is, why people still do it.
Nothing like spending your older years with an oxygen mask on 24-7!

Connie 11-24-2009 11:15 PM

Coffee! Just buy a bag of cheap coffee and open it and set it in the closet or anywhere else you want the smell absorbed! I'm not sure if your clothes would smell like coffee though.

Rall 11-25-2009 08:24 AM

Oh yeah. Don't you just hate it when you're out somewhere nice and catch a wiff of your hair only to notice it smells like cheap cigarettes? I sure do. And that might be a million dollar idea there. I could, at the very least, put some kind of air freshener down there.

The smell of coffee is 100 times better than cigarette smoke, so even if I did I'd consider that a win. Not so sure about the charcoal though. :p

Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm gonna try to make the best of an old, bad situation until I can finally move into a smoke free home.

Breezeaway 11-25-2009 08:34 AM

Plain charcoal, that you use in a grill. Not the kind that has lighter fluid in it like matchlight.

Rall 11-25-2009 11:18 AM

Ohhhhh, Okay! I'm not much of a griller so I had no idea there was a difference. I'm gonna see if I can't try all of these to decide which works the best. :)

Ladymom 11-25-2009 11:49 AM

Oh, yuck. there is nothing worse than cigarette smoke in your clothes and hair.

Not just the smell, but aren't you worried about secondhand smoke? And your poor Yorkie is exposed to it, too.

If it were me, I'd find another place to live. It's not worth jeopardizing your health.

Yorkiedaze 11-25-2009 02:14 PM

Your husband doesn't have any respect for you or your health, or he would be doing his nasty smoking outside. You should really have a talk with him about this bad situation. Your life is at stake here.

lrichardsonrnc 11-25-2009 02:52 PM

I took care of my Mom as she was dying from the habit. You have my sympathy. She needed my help and it was the least I could do (for 21 months). I'll never regret not nagging her. I've never smoked but I've heard it is hard as heck to quit. I literally put a bowl vinegar in the bottom of my closet and a towel over the crack at the bottom to be able to wear my own clothes home. It worked. The smoke was miserable but the relationship with my Mom was priceless. She would have done it for me.

@Ladymom: Unfortunately, I am but a lowly college student with a part time job, and with everything that's going on, I don't even have the money for an apartment. It's something I've lived with since I was a small child, so any damage that could be done probably already has. I do feel bad for Gordon... But my first dog lived with me for 15 years, and the smoke never seemed to affect him.

@Yorkiedaze: Haha, it's not my husband. It's my grandmother. I'd never date, let alone marry, a smoking man. :)

@lrichardsonrnc: I think if anyone were to understand my situation, it'd definitely be you. I love my Grandmother dearly, and so I don't get onto her about her cigarettes. She's taken care of me all my life, and tried to quit 4 times already. She doesn't go to doctors, either. So, I don't gripe about it. I've just been quietly trying to find a way to lessen the effects it has on me.

I smoked (heavily - 2 - 3 packs/day) for 24 years. Finally was able to quit in 1990 and have never looked back. I tried many different ways and finally I found the answer in Smokenders. www.smokenders.com

You are right not to nag your grandmother. Sounds like she loves you very much and you her! Nagging does not help a person with an addiction. You could suggest something like Smokenders since she has tried to quit in the past. I am sure there might be a way for you to do it in a way that is not nagging. It is an incredible program that covers all of the issues in addiction to nicotine. The nice part about it is that you don't quit cold turkey and THEN learn about how to cope...I tried those programs and they did not work. There really is a withdrawal from nicotine and it is most unpleasant. With Smokenders there is no withdrawal...that is covered by tapering off. It is done in a controlled way. I really cannot say enough good things about it.

Make him go outside. We both smoke but NEVER EVER in the house and NEVER EVER around Lilly. It is so gross and I'm not going to make her be around it and I also don't want my house smelling like an ashtray. Wish I could kick the habit.

If you know your dog can't get into the closet, I would recommend baking soda. If you can make the space I would recommend getting a cheap baking sheet (with sides!) and filling it with baking soda and sitting it on the floor. Baking soda is good at absorbing odors, and by giving it more air space it might catch a little more then it you just stuck a box in there.

Charcoal like a couple other people mentioned works really well too. An air purifier in your room would do the best job (would catch all the smoke) but they aren't overly cheap. (If you go that route, I would recommend one with a cleanable filter - a couple brands make them but I know hunter does. Also avoid the ones that just "ionize" you really want something that has several different layers of filtering since it will catch more.)

I have a great product you can try ....Many Hotels use it for their smoking rooms - It's called MAXIUM CAPRI -ORIGINAL Fresh Scents - You can order it online but you'll need a spray bottle I think.

it smells a bit like lemons but takes out all oders in the home and last a long time - it's like Fabreeze only way stronger

I like the smell of Fabreeze better but this is an industrial product - you only need 3 sprays around the house and viola !

My SIL uses it and gave some to me - it's really good - you can smell it 24 hours later in your house so go easy with it.

I'm working on finding it at a good price - I'll know today and then will pm you or whoever is interested - this stuff is great - even my son commented on it.

I spent alot of money on fabreeze just because I love the smell - but this eliminates ALL household smells - it's pretty potent - so you have to spray lightly - a bottle should last a long long time,

MeganS 11-29-2009 10:23 AM

First - Oooh this magic spray sounds amazing! There aren't any indoor smokers in my house (I'm allergic to it), but the cat box can get awfully stanky sometimes. and it's an old house so it doesn't always smell so "fresh" - I'd definitely like to learn about this spray!!

Second - OMG HI V!!!!

haha Megan - HI to you too !!!

Ok so far this is what I have - My sister in law managed to get a case wholesale - BUT the good thing is - We can get it retail from a wholesaler by the bottle -

This is a QUART size bottle - good for Smoke - Pets - eliminates litter box smells and also - it's a product many companies use for people who had fires in their homes / businesses & they sell wholesale to many big hotel chains.

ONE bottle should last 6 months or longer.

I'm trying to get a set retail price with the shipping and should have it by tomorrow - I know the price will be UNDER 25 per bottle - I think it's going to be about 22$ which is a huge deal because it will last so long.

I have a bottle (a gift) and it's the best I've ever used for room freshening. 3 sprays in my apartment is all I need. It IS awesome.

I did need to get my own spray bottle but you could use a fabreeze bottle or any kind of sprayer - those are super cheap to buy.

and Hi Chach !!!

red98vett 12-02-2009 05:09 AM

An update on the spray I talked about - today I should be hearing back about the price and shipping. The more I use this stuff the more I like it

I walked in last night from work and my apt smelled so good ! My son used 2 sprays and that was all. It removes cooking smells too :) I'm a Fabreeze fan - love the smell and also have reed diffusers but this stuff def works well
