Sofa too big, door too small... I inherited a beautiful sleeper sofa and love seat from my mom, but it won't fit thru the door. It's been in the garage for two weeks!!! My mom shipped it to us from Tampa, so returning it is not an option. We had the door removed but it still does not fit. I've called several furniture stores for help, but to no avail. My hubby does not want to remove the door frame, so that's not an option. I tried to find a company in GA who disassembles and assembles furniture but could not find one, yet. The love seat got thru the door, barely. The sofa has a fabric covering, and because it is fairly new...about 3 years, the armrest are not removable. I know what you are thinking...American Kidney Foundation...Salvation Army, but I really like that set. Any ides? |
I don't have a clue. Remove a double window, maybe? |
I know this may sound extreme, but have you considered popping out a window somewhere? If you have a newer home with an opening large enough, this is actually a lot easier than you would think....it doesn't alter the structure of your home like taking down the wall around the door frame. Oh, and 'been there, done that,' only my shining moment involved a queen size box spring that wouldn't fit up a narrow, winding staircase. :) Good luck! |
That really stinks!......Are you sure you tried turning the sofa on an angle. We had one that wouldn't fit through the door by holding it on the ends as if you just picked it up off the floor.....but when we turned it so the cushions where facing more to the floor it seemed to go in better.... I hope you find a solution soon or I think someone will be turning the garage into the living room!...;) |
Oh dear, I hope you can figure something out. When I had the same thing happen to me, I was lucky enough to have a patio door it would barely fit through. Short of a big window, as others have suggested, I dunno. I Googled it, here is a link that may be helpful http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...9132412AAme7bs |
Do you have a bulkhead for your basement? Most furniture fits through a bulkhead and then you can try to get it upstairs once it's in the house. Thats a bummer though. I never understand how a furniture company can justify making furniture bigger than a doorway... I had a friend who had to leave her couch in her 3 season porch and buy a new one.. it just would not go into the house no matter what they did. Such a bummer! Try sawing off the legs if it has legs.... then your hubby can just screw them back on. that may give you the few inches you need..... he should take off the door frame, it's not that hard to take it off and put it back on. |
How unfortunate!!! As other suggest you, a large window frame might be the easiest way. Good luck |
They only way we could get our sleeper sofa in the house was to turn it on end....stand it up so the armrests are near the ceiling & floor. WOW those suckers are heavy! We call ours the 'widow maker'! |

I remember we I moved to my first apartment I had to buy IKEA furnitures for my bedroom as my bedroom set would not make it up the small CIRCULAR OUTSIDE STAIRCASE... The mattress barely make it, and I had to gave up on the box spring. |

Like others have said the window thing worked to get our queen size boxspring into our upstairs LOL you should have seen my hubby pulling it onto the porch roof to go in threw my daughters window he straped it to himself and his buddy pushed him up the ladder |
I just thought maybe a moving company might have an idea as it's what they do maybe they'll come and help |
One time we were able to unscrew the "legs" that were attached to the bottom, and that allowed it to be "fit" through the door after we turned it several different ways!!!! Good luck! |
We had that problem with our leather couches...we took it through our sliding glass door in the back by removing both glass pieces. It was fairly simple to get the sliding door off the track and removing the other door with a screwdriver. Hope this can help you...:) |
You guys are the absolute best! Thank you for your ideas...I plan to try each one. The window one would work, but my husband doesn't want to have the window removed and replaced. (Maybe I could have it done while he's at work!) The movers tried different angles, but I don't think they tried with the bottom up...you know, totally upside down. It's a sleeper so that may be difficult, but worth a try. I'm going to check the "legs" in a couple of minutes. What a nightmare!! |
