Boating -- Pleasure Cruising -- Advice needed Ok, here's the scoop -- hubby went to visit a neighbor and came home with a 21' cabin cruiser. The boat had been left out in the weather for several years and needed extensive repair -- in fact hubby stripped it all the way down to the fiberglass shell. He plans to have the boat completely rebuilt by spring. The boat is ocean worthy and we plan to do some extensive travels this coming year -- the plan is to haul the boat to South Georgia, drop the boat in the water and off we go. If all goes well  we will navigate around the coast and explore the Keys and if things go even better :D we will be able to find where we left our truck and trailer :confused: . The question I have is..... when you are out on the water and NEED a Starbucks, how do you find a "drive through". Hubby has a lot of experience with boats (long time ago) but none with long trips..... and my only experience was very limited -- childhood trips. So.... if you have any advice as to where/how to get navigational charts and maps, and/or know of what to ask for or classes to take, please let me know. Any and all advice would be appreicated. |
wow Cindy- how lucky! I am from a boating family but we have never a) rebuilt a boat or b) taken on such a journey! Sorry I am no help with the charts- I would assume you would have to buy them in the area you plan on boating- at a nautical store- something like West Marine- they might also be able to direct you to classes. You are going to have SO much fun. |
Cindy, all you have to do is come down to the Missouri river and pick me up:D. I have an espresso machine to bring along;) I hope you find some info because I don't want you to get lost out there!!! You are going to have lots of fun!!!!! :) |

Wow, how exciting. Are you taking your sewing machine along? I think you need to study those maps Cindy because you know how men hate to ask for directions:p All joking aside it sounds like so much fun. Having come from So. Jersey I spent many hours on the bay and ocean with my father as a young girl. I have no idea how we got there or home again so I'm no help. Good luck to you and Bon Voy Age. |

I will not be taking the sewing machine along.... BUT Emmitt will be our Honorary Skipper. |
Do I need to housesit? |
Cindy, this is what we use http://www.jeppesen.com/marine/light...ndustry=Marine |
That sounds like so much fun! |
South Florida is made for boating! By Boca Raton they have dock-side starbucks, jimmy johns delivers and much more! If you have money, you can hire a crew to take care of the mundane and just focus on looking beautiful! |
Funny thing about men... My husband took the pups for a walk last night & came home with a 12' Sunfish! |
Contact the coast guard and ask them to send you some rules and regs. Buy a big bell too. ;) |
I'm sure the coast guard is a great suggestion. I'm sorry I can't help you. I have enough trouble navigating my car. Never mind a boat. LOL |
If your Garmin gps has the capability of using chips, they are great! Not cheap but well worth the money. The chips are most up to date and they show everything, fish traps and all. I think you can program your trip on your laptop and then plug your laptop into your gps and that way you will have your hold trip uploaded. you can do it all comfortably rather than sitting in front of the gps. I'll have to get hubby to s'plain it to me. He's tied up getting ready for the boat show this week so not a real good time to ask him anything. I'll try and find something out and let you know. :) |
