help with paint color
 

I have a white comforter with a big red flower on it. I want to paint my walls. Anyone have a suggestion on paint color? I don't want yellow because the whole downstairs is red and yellow. I'm getting a little tired of that combination:rolleyes:

We just painted our house a clay color...kind of dark taupe but leaning towards the gray side, not the yellow side of taupe. If you painted that color with white trim and used red as the accent color it would look great.

I love taupe with white and pops of red, very striking yet serene.

That's a good idea. Maybe I'll paint it that color. I was about to color the walls green, but then I remembered the comforter I plan putting in there is red. I think red and green might be a bit much.

The green could work too, but when mixing complementary colors, it's best to have one of them be dominant with just splashes of the other color. The green also would work well with the yellow in surrounding rooms; I still like the idea of rooms flowing together. You don't have to use the same colors in each room, but the colors all work well with each other. If you look at the conforter, is it mostly white or mostly red? If red, I would probably go with the taupe, if white, either color paint would work.

It's beautiful, it looks like they used a light taupe shade in the background, and I do love the way that looks, but so much depends on the shade of green you choose. Here's a shade that's a green/grey, but to me it looks like the colors are fighting each other, and neither one is dominant. Red is such a dominant color, and if you are using that much, neutrals, seem to go well. The room pictured in your link would also blend well with other rooms painted a yellow color. Sometimes if you are painting lots of rooms in your house a strong color, it's great to have a room that has a more neutral choice, it makes you appreciate the differences.

I really like the clay/taupe for the wall color in each room, it's neutral enough to use whatever color you want with it and it's classy...but it can be contemporary, country or upscale too. I used it in this house with oak hard wood floors, oak cabinets and trim...and then for the fabric to draw from I used plaid curtain valances in the living room. I pulled one of the colors for each of the other rooms from that plaid...that way the house is coordinated all the way through.

Depending on what brand of paint you want to use, Ill give you a link to a virtual painter program, that i have used countless times and love. If anything else you can have fun just playing with the program. The paint used is Valspar paint that can be found at Lowes' hardware. Hope this is useful!

Sounds really pretty, and I love the idea, of using the same colors for other rooms, as was in the plaid valances. What was the name of your paint color? I too have oak hardwood floors, and I would like to find a color that works with them.

The color I used is called Coffee House...I got it at Wal-Mart. There is also a Martha Stewart color that is a shade or two lighter than this one called Pearl Gray...I used that one in the lake house with white trim and oak floors and it looked great...I got it at Menard's.

The valances I have are a plaid made up of taupe, deep red, green and cream. The green is maybe sage green...too many green colors for me to remember! I used red accents (towels, utensil holder etc...) in the kitchen with the same curtain because it's an open area...green with cream in the spare bedroom, deep red and taupe in our bedroom and taupe and white in each of the bathrooms. Each room has the same wall color but each one has it's own predominant color pulled from the valances. I love it...it's pleasing to look from one end of the house to the other. I've been in some homes where your eyes just about pop from the stress of too many colors...the soothing taupe flowing from one wall to the next doesn't give you that reaction.

We also have oak cabinets in the kitchen and I picked out a granite for the counter tops that has the taupe, reds and gray. It is perfect with the cabinets and colors I picked out and it looks great with stainless steel appliances...which we will also do. The granite is called Saint Cecelia I think. I also plan to use it for the bathroom vanity tops and floors. We just used the same combination in the house we gave our son and everyone who sees it really likes it.

P.S. We had a home several years ago with oak floors and I used a buttery yellow on the walls...it looked great with the oak.

Thanks for replying, I use to go nuts with colors, but then I found, I got sick of the rooms too fast, and now like neutrals, except for accents, I just don't get as tired of the rooms this way. When looking at homes, seeing every room painted a different strong color was almost depressing or overwhelming, it does give a much choppier effect. I've done every variation of yellow years ago, and use to love it, but maybe it's just too sunny here. :D

Thanks everyone for the reply. I bought this color called tea bag, but when I started painting I realized it doesn't look good at all. I plan taking it in to see if they can change it by adding some other color to the same paint. Not sure if it'll work or not. Ah man! I wish I didn't get a gallon of it.

What don't you like about it, too gold, too dark, sometime mixing it with white can help.
