Austism - Carly Fleischmann Did anyone see 20/20 last night? The last story was about a 13 year old girl with autism named Carly Fleischmann. She cannot speak and yells and hits tables...but she learned how to communicate using the computer. Not only is this girl completely normal, she is actually very smart! Some of the things she types are so profound! It's really amazing. You can go here and read some of the conversations she has had with her dad and different people. Samples of Carly’s Writings | Carly's Voice - Changing the World of Autism, by Carly Fleischmann She has really been able to explain what autism is and why autistic people do the things they do. She's an incredible girl. |
I watched it and was in AW. she had no education, yet she knew how ro spell words. This has to be a major breakthrough in understanding Autism. Several years ago they did a study on teaching Autistic children to use the computer but there was a lot of controversy as to whether or not the people who were steadying the autistic childs hand was actually guiding it. |
I was able to watch it too and I was in aw of this girl! I live 2 houses over from a 17 year old girl names Nikki that is Autistic so this was very informational for us. Nikki is able to talk to you and its always very interesting to see things from her point of view. I also thought it was nice for my sons to watch so maybe they could get some understanding on why Nikki acts the way she does. |
That's so cool. My cousin is 8 years old and she is autistic. |
My nephew has Asperger's syndrome, and is a literal genius! How dare anyone ever call him disabled? He is 7 years old and currently does Algebraic math... Socially, he has trouble playing with kids his age, but can carry on a conversation with an adult just fine. He has a fascinating way of looking at things. I think the way society labels people is terrible. Why on earth is it ok for them to make him and others who are more advanced intellectually, feel inadequate with themselves due to social problems? Just my 2 cents... Now, I'll watch some of Carly's writings :) |
Carly obviously has a different form of Autism then what I'm used to, but she seems quite extraordinary! I cannot imagine how frustrating it must be for her to not be able to communicate the way she wants. Hopefully, she will be able to overcome the odds even more :) !!! |
