Any cooks out there? How do you organize your recipes? I'm getting to the point where I can't rely just on memory. I want to get them all up on my computer. What program would you think would be best? Excel? Then I can pull them up alphabetically? |
I used word years ago to do my mother-n-laws.. It took me FOREVER. Right before I was done, computer crashed. It was all gone. I was so upset. I have a cute longaberger recipe box that I keep most mine in. |
I love to cook and my fiance is a chef.....we are old fashion, everything is on hand writing or just on our mind;) |
Yah I know, but now that I am not living at my own home, not my own kitchen, not cooking regularly, I'm gonna forget my recipes, I wanna keep them in something so they are not lost forever. When we lost our home I misplaced my recipes and I thought they were lost forever. I found some of them, thank god!!! |
oh! I would use works word processor i i have to and I have windows vista:rolleyes: |
I meant if I have the windows vista, sorry |
I work off of a mac though... |
I just create Word documents, and then save them into folders. The folders are named 'beef', 'venison', 'veggies', 'pork', etc; which makes recipes easy to retrieve. I also have a folder called 'favourites' - although by the time I've used a recipe once or twice, I usually don't need to check it again. I 'tweak' recipes all the time, adding a little of this and a little of that - until it often bears no resemblance to the original! |
I have a mac and do the same as lesly carol. But, I print my favorite ones and 3 hole punch them, put them in a plastic sleeve (got them at Walmart) and then put the recipes in a 3 ring binder. I use separating dividers with tabs for categories, e.g., soup, chicken, salad, desserts, etc. When I use one of them, I can just open the binder, take it out and have it on the counter to follow. The plastic sleeve keeps it from getting wet (I'm a messy cook). |
When you figure it out, let me know. I have recipes on the computer; on discs that are outdated; on flash discs; another bunch on an external hard drive; a million cookbooks and cooking magazines from one end of the house to the other; I have some on this computer in my Microsoft Office One-Note; and I have three binders filled with my family favorites and old recipes I got from my mom. |

I know what you mean about the outdated formats though. My dad asked me the other day if I still wanted my old disks from when I was still in school. They are zip disks and a jaz disc, I was like, um no. |
Everything is in my head. I hate to write down anything. |
What word processing program do you have on your Mac? I have both Appleworks and Word and just type my recipes on there, print them out and put in a three ring binder. Another one of my favorites is Allrecipes.com. Not only can you add recipes from their website to your recipe box but you can also add your own private recipes. I submitted a few of my own recipes and finally got one published the first week of June. No one has reviewed it yet so I'm not sure how it will do. Also, if you want to get fancy there are websites where you can create your own cookbook and have it printed. Prices vary quite a bit but I have found one that I thought was very reasonably priced. You can add pics of the dishes as well as many other options. My kids wanted many of my recipes so I started this as a gift for them but came to realize it would also be a great way for me to have all of my favorite recipes in one place. |
There are some really cool programs where you put in your receipe and it will convert it into portion size, calorie and save as a receipe card. I will have to call and ask my sister what the name is. I have a blank receipe book and it has catorgies so I just write down all my favorites. Someday I will pass it on to my daughter. If she ever gets out of taco bell and into the kitchen. |
I have word on my mac. I don't want to print out b/c what I am actually trying to do is save space, I have a whole stack of recipes that I keep losing them one by one. I"ll check out allrecipes.com I didn't know you could upload them. |
