What to do with old computer? I dropped my laptop and the screen broke. HP wanted me to pay almost as much as a new computer to repair it. Because of this, I just went ahead and bought a new one (from Dell :p). I'm not sure what to do with my old laptop. Because the screen is broken, I can't get on and delete everything. Any suggestions for a safe place to dispose of it? |
You could try to sell it for parts to your local tech shop or something.... But I see what you mean about not being able to delete your personal stuff... HMMMMM maybe go to a tech/ repair computer store and have them erase or destroy your hard drive for you and then you could just throw it away......good luck sorry I couldnt help more. |
If you bring it to a tech shop...theres probably a way to hook up an external monitor to it ...and they could take your information out of it and put it on a memory stick. I would definitely sell it for parts. |
You could also go "office space" gangsta style on it and beat the crap out of it with a baseball bat! |

I took mine to a tech they took out something maybe the hard drive and loaded it on disc so I could install in my new computer |

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I think I might just hold onto it and take it to a computer place when I have time. :) |
My stepson broke the screen on his laptop and he found a new screen on ebay for about $70 and he replaced it himself. You can also hook up a monitor up to the computer and reformat the laptop then you can just sell it on ebay as is. |
Goodwill Computer Works (in Austin) takes computer parts. You could get a tax deduction and help the community. I just heard about this program the other day and thought it was pretty cool. :) Goodwill Computer Works Home - we put people to work Maybe they have a program like this in your area? |
If you are concerned about getting you info and files off of it, you can always hook up a monitor to it. Best Buy's Geek Squad will do it for you if you are unsure. They probably charge an arm and a leg for such a simple service. Then you could have your old files. Hubby (computer engineer) says there are services that will destroy the laptop for you, or you can sell it for spare parts after your files have been destroyed. Good Luck! |

Sorry, no clue what to do with the old laptop, though! |
We have computer recycling once a month at our county gov't center. You might have something like that near you. Find out what size hard drive your laptop had, and you can get enclosures for them at Best Buy or Amazon - you take the HD out of the laptop and plug it into the enclosure to essentially make it an external hard drive. Then you can pull your data off and also use it for backup. Then recycle the rest of the computer! |
