Cake Decorating? This is going to sound a little different, but trust me, we're having fun. My 22-year-old son and I are learning how to decorate cakes together this summer. He's preparing to get his own apartment this fall and move out of our house. Part of that process is learning how to cook. (That's been VERY interesting, let me tell you.) He has been watching the cooking channel and started seeing all of the cake challenges, and wanted to try it. Well, we're having a blast! And the best part is that we can eat our mistakes. ;) We're also thinking about taking the Wilton courses together this summer while I'm out of school. We are keeping a photo log of our progress, and it's been hilarious so far. I need to download the photos from the camera sometime today. In the meantime, do you decorate your own cakes? Have you had fun with it? Do you have photos or tips to share? In particular, tips on how to save money doing this? Some of this stuff is expensive. Fun, but expensive. |
I would LOVE to learn how to decorate cakes!! I love watching Cake Boss!! Sadly I am not very artistic when it comes to things like that. I LOVE to scrapbook and I love photography but don't do well sewing and I venture to guess that cake decorating wouldn't be very pretty. I would love to take a class though. My friend and I were just talking about this. |
If you like scrapbooking, you might really like decorating with fondant. It's basically like rolling out dough and cutting out shapes. Google "fondant" and see what you think. I tried once before and struggled with the tips and such, but the fondant is a whole new world! |
Cake Decorating I am a baker, I had a business baking cakes/pies/? and I love to make my own recipes. I have a killer one called Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate cake. 4-layer with raspberries in the middle. Anyway I never got into decorating but if you need any recipes just let me know. I will share. Cheryl:animal-pa |
i LOVE LOVE LOVE the taste of fondant!! its soo yummy!! However, I am the person behind the phrase "She can burn water". I try not to cook...its not good! Its funny cause when people find out i'm Italian..they automatically assume i'm an awesome cook. And when they find out i cant....theres a look of shock on their face LoL . Thats what happens when parents spoil you rotten...hek, i didnt even make my bed til i was married at 23:eek::D |
OOO! Yes please! That sounds truly decadent. :D |

I guess that's one reason I'm determined that my son goes into the world with at least a clue or two. ;) He now even knows about thread count in sheets, which I didn't learn until I was 30 something! lol |
Judy if y'all can the wilton class do it...you will LOVE it. I want to go to their school SO bad, can't afford it or leve the kids to do it. I can pipe and star tip...sometimes it looks GREAT sometimes I wouldn't even let my Mama see it! Once you get your tip collection that will help with cost. Get a recipe for your own frosting and make a bunch, firmer for what you will decorate with. I worked in a bakery, but they never trained me for anything other than shell borders and streamers:rolleyes: but, they would grap wax paper to use or plastic bags and cut it for the cupling and tip at the bottom. Have Fun, Angie |
Oh I bet you are having so much fun! My adult son has taken an interest in cooking as well. He has purchased many of Gordon Ramsey's cook books (from the show hells kitchen) And I have to say the food that he prepares is so good. It puts my cooking to shame! Infact I had 12 friends over for Bunko last month and he cooked and served all of us and the food was amazing! The ladies all wanted to know if he was for hire! Tell your son to go for it and have a great time! |
Hi Judy I took a Wilton class and it was fun..learning how to make roses..hahaha. I also have the complete Martha Stewart frosting tips in a cool case. I don't bake as much as I'd like to now that my son moved out years ago to attend school and live...but I love to bake and always bake from scratch..most times. I have a killer red devils food cake handed down from my grandmother. True..so much fun to eat the mistakes.:D Have fun in class! |

I taught myself..YOU can do it for sure! You guys will have a lot of fun learning. I have tons of books and supplies..but sadly enough they just sit around! I once made a wedding cake for 500..it was awesome. the bride flew in flowers from Hawaii. that is kinda where it stopped being fun for me. it was 20 hrs of work I just did not have a kitchen equipped for that size of cake. I do smaller cakes now only when asked. I love working with fondant....but have to make my own. Commercial fondants just dont taste good to me. Good luck in your learning!! |

That sounds like so much fun, Judy! Even more so with your son learning along with you. He is lucky to have you as a mom. Can't wait to see some of your creations. If I was closer I would help you eat your mistakes :D... |
That actually sounds really cool and fun. My aunt is pretty big into fancy cake making and I've dabbled in it a bit. I'm addicted to those shows, Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, etc. You should check out this site: Cake Wrecks It's hilarious, you'll appreciated it. |

3 Attachment(s) Okay, you have to promise you won't laugh too hard. Chris and I have decided to keep our day jobs. :p :D 1st cake - was our first cake...kinda flat, Chris learned you don't overmix the cake batter. ;) Sunflower cupcakes....a little orange..lol! I think we're getting better though. The next cake will be for Father's Day....I think it will be a Star Trek theme. Shhh...don't tell! |
Brings back memories............ When my kids were small, I used to love decorating cakes for them! They started out pretty simple with the formed cake pans or a flat sheet cake with things like a football field decorated on top of it with plastic football players perched on top. As I got better and/or more creative, I moved up to tracing pictures of my kids' favorite characters onto the iced cake and then used thin icing to "paint" the pictures. I did pics from Beauty & the Beast, 101 Dalmations, Ninja Turtles, Where's Waldo, Minnie Mouse, Elmo,.....to name just a few. They were in no way professional, but they did turn out well if I do say so myself. People told me to do it semi-professionally, but as my kids got older and the more I did, it was just too much work to do it for anything other than fun for my kids. I did a few for my grand-daughter also, but have since retired from cake decorating. It's so much easier to buy one from the store. |

OMG Judy what a great job you guys did on the cake and cupcakes.:D I especially love the sunflower cupcakes..yumm..I wish I could reach through the screen and eat one. They are so cute and you both did a fabulous job. Just think the more you do the better you get. Funny when I was in my cake decorating phase my neighbors loved it because we couldn't eat all that stuff I practiced on so they got all the cake and cupcakes that we couldn't eat..lol:rolleyes: |
