Horse Confusion: need advice I got back into horses over a year ago. I bought a horse and spent quite a bit of money on her. I was laid off over the summer and put her up for sale. I have gone back to work but I have left her up for sale and now she is drawing interest. I figured she'll never sell since the horse market is down and her price is higher that most but not for her breed. She is a great, safe, sane mare. I have been told its hard to find good horses and I'll be sorry if I sell her. I do get nervous every time I get an email of interest but I feel guilty if I keep her due to the economy and stuff. I tell myself I had no business spending the money that I did on her and I can replace her with a cheaper horse but I guess you get attached. Why do I feel so guilty? She's the only thing I have thats me as far as a hobby. I feel guilty when I am away from my family trail riding. The kids are grown and no one else seems to have much interest. I don't know what wrong with me. I am allow to have my own interests right? I have had horses as a kid and we had one 10 years ago. Its kinda a part of me. Does any one esle feel torn like this or am I crazy? |
Sometimes I think that it is a woman thing. We never allow ourselves to "enjoy" much. We have a lot of guilt over the stupid little things. We can buy the kids a new tv and we watch one that is 15 years old. Sometime in life we have to allow ourselves to have a little bit of "fun..just for me." I still find it had to do anything for me. My DH is always telling me to enjoy life...we work hard for out money. It is time for us. If you love and care for this horse...and you are back in a position to afford her...keep her...enjoy her....guilt free. |
I know how much I love my horse as she is a huge part of my life. Horses allow us a momentary escape from our hectic lives, and they are trustworthy friends. I think you'd be crazy to sell her, as long as you can afford her. Why would you want to start the bonding and training processes all over again with a new horse? Keep your mare, and don't feel guilty about spending time with her; she is part of the family! |
I have been where you are now. My horse is my sanity at times, Cochise and I have been together for 24yrs and counting we have ridden a lot of miles together. I enjoy just getting out and riding in the woods by myself I call this my time. peaceful and quite end of a long day. Cochise is now 28yrs old and though I have two other horses to ride I always saddle my old man and we go for shorter and slower rides these days. as far as the expense goes you know in reality there really not that more expense then dogs, at least mine have not been, a lot of it you can do yourself, shots, wormers, etc. enjoy your horse. |
i don't know about you but it's really hard to find a sane stable horse around here where i'm at ! you can still get one that's been through lots of training and it sees a goat and off you go down into the dirt! if you have a good one i say keep her because at least with you that way you know she has a good safe place to call home theres no telling who or what she may end up with if you would sale her the two horse we have now are pretty but we cant ride them id LOVE to have one i could at the very least ride!!! |
HA! My goats are penned up right next to my horses, so I know I won't have THAT problem at least! My OLD horse (old horse for a reason!) could not go by a house with horses because he would spaz! OP...keep your horse. My horses bring such joy to me. We lost our old guy over the winter and it was so hard. He really was the best. I don't consider horses a luxery like going out and buying yourself a new wardrobe every 6 months. They are my companions, my friends, a natural antidepressant, a retreat, they bring peace, they are just great animals to have. I don't have fancy horses with pedigrees that I can take to shows and brag about. I just have sweet horses that are my great friends. My family is my first love, my dogs are like my babies, and my horses are my friends. They provide companionship on a whole nother level than any other animal does. If thats what you need for you, don't give that up if you don't have to. |
