URGENT! Anyone have any baby wildlife rescue experience? My fiance brought home a baby orphaned squirrel today. He was driving home from work and saw it sitting on the side of the road. The baby is very skinny and he didn't want to just leave it there so he picked it up and brought it home. He then went to the pet store, bought a hamster cage and some hamster food. I got home from school and looked online to see what it said. It gave a recipe for a formula to try & feed it. It's eyes/ears are open and it's furry. From what we could find online it looks like it's maybe a month and a half old  It has mites/fleas. I put a ripped up shirt in the cage for him to sleep in and he's been climbing the cage since I've been home... We tried feeding him soe of the formula in a puppy bottle but he won't suck it... Does ANYONE have any experience with orphaned baby wild animals? I looked online for a wildlife rescue organization that's local but can't seem to find anything. I got home too late to call the SPCA or the vet up here so I figure I'll give them a call tomorrow to see what they say.... Anybody have any suggestions? |
I have a friend who has raised a baby squirrel she found injured. I will email her and see what she says. |
1 Attachment(s) My friend who worked at the Pentagon rescued an orphaned baby squirrel last August. He took care of the squirrel for about 3 weeks and then it died, sadly, it's easy for them to catch pneumonia. But it was a wonderful experience, while it lasted! |
Sorry, my experience with wild life has been with 4 baby racoons and I will never do that again !!!! :( What a mess not to mention they are noisey little rascals.... |
That was really nice of your bf to stop. I don't have experience, but definitely hope the ASPCA can lead you to where you need to go for help. |
All I can say is don't feed it jelly beans. My friend's father had one once and one day he started feeding it jelly beans which the little guy loved. The next day they came home and it had died. My friend looked up on the net and it said not to feed them sweets like jelly beans. I'm sure yours is too young for this now anyway. I don't know if they ever had to bottle feed theirs or not so I can't really help you one that sorry. Well good luck and I'm sure if you keep him you'll have fun with it, they loved theirs. |
We did this once and it didn't work either but i was giving them baby formula. I have since learned that you can try to keep him alive with kitty milk replacer from the petstore or you can use this recipe as a formula: 1 can evaporated milk 1 egg 1/4 cup Karo Syrup I have a ton of wild cats i feed and I end up with orphaned kitties occasionally. This works for them. My vet gave me the recipe and he said he raised 2 raccoons on it. You can buy the tiny baby bottles at the petstore or use an eye dropper. Good Luck! |
