Thank you all, it is so appreciated. Yes it is a huge wieght off my shoulders, I need to make money to make up for some of the money we lost in our investments. Honestly, I just need to get out of the house - I go stir crazy here all day and dog and the cat think I am crazy because I carry on conversations with them. Karrie, I have to agree about the economy I am not an economist but things seemed to pick up as far as job wise around the first of March. Again, Thank you all. What a nice group of people we have on Yorkie Talk. |
Congratulations, that's great you received a good job offer! That's not an easy thing in this market! :congrats: I hope I will be able to say that before too long, I'm also losing my job! |
Congratulations Cheryl! These surely are different times....but you did it! |
Congratulations! Each time I hear of someone finding a new job it makes me feel like maybe we'll all survive and things will get better. I'm in a really strange position myself as I have been a stay at home mom for 27 years now. I am a licensed hairstylist and kept my license up but had only worked 3 months at it quite a long time ago. In the mean time I've raised 4 kids ages 26, 24, 21, and almost 13. DH's business has really felt the crunch of the economy but I at this point don't even know where to start to find a job. No experience at much other then being a wife and mother (that's allot to those of us that know it but not in the work force) and that doesn't fill up a resume very good. I'm way too far out of the hair business to even consider getting into it without some kind of continued education. Times are tight and trying to get the 3rd child through college doesn't leave me much room for school for myself. Not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions? |
Hi Roxies Mom, you would be surprised the experience you can put on a resume from being a stay at home Mom. You have experience with EVERYTHING from risk management to time management (honest). One thing I would suggest is explore what makes you happy and make it your job. Example, one of my friends is a School Teacher and during the summer and holidays she works at Starbucks because she loves coffee and reading (this Starbucks is in a Barnes and Noble). My friend is always telling people that likes teaching but LOVES her Starbucks job. I always tell people that my retirement job is going to be at Ikea. I love going to Ikea and just looking at all the "stuff". What better job to have if you need to work. Also I would Google Torie Johnson, she is a career advisor for women and has a weekly news segment on Good Morning America. Personally I think she offers very good, sound advice. Good luck and let me know if you need encourgement, I am always up for providing encouragement. |
SophieKatesmom- Thank you so much for the advice. I love Ikea too but the closest to me is in Chicago. I think your idea about working in a place that you enjoy being is a good one. Plus it can start as part time so that I don't have such a huge shock jumping into it. I still want to get the youngest raised up and be here for him. It turns out that all 3 of my older kids are moving out this year and I'm sure the baby is going to feel a bit more empty nest then me. Thanks for the tip and I'll probably hit you up for some of that encouragment!! :) |
I for one am thrilled that you found a good job. I lost my job last month, and the job openings around here are very few. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for better times ahead...and that I too can say "Yay for me, I got a job"!!! |
I will keep my fingers crossed and offer you career prayers. Seriously if you need encouragement let me know. I could not have made it through my unemployment without encouragement. One piece of advice I would offer is stop watching the news. I seriously believe that watching the news did nothing but stop my motivation since they never have any good news stories these days. Good luck and when you make your job post I will be there cheering for you and you will get to make that post :). |
I believe your right about not watching the news. They paint the grimmest picture and it really gets depressing and makes you not want to try. We all have to have faith that this will turn around, it has to. Everyday I find myself saying a prayer for the less fortunate and that things will turn around. It's sad when you have people willing to work hard with no job and then others who take their jobs for granted and complain about it. I tell my kids that right now anyone who has a job should be happy. It's up to us the people to change our attitudes for the better. |
