Because once again, you took personl offense to a term that was being used correctly in a conversation and deamed it as negativity, when that wasn't how it was intended.. ;) Until that point, the conversation was discussing the subject matter of the original post.

Yeah, I'm not so sure I understand anymore...actually, I was originally questioning what made the AKCs attempts to do this so different. But, you and Nikki have pointed out some of the differences, so...

K...I'm sure you have a point, I'm just not sure what it is. In any case, You prefer the term "mixed breed", I <appropriately> use the term mutt, along with other terms from time to time during discussion. I don't think there is much left to be said on the matter....at least until the next time it's blown out of proportion and someone has to defend themself for using a term appropriately.

This is pretty simple. The AKC is going to issue numbers to mixed breed dogs so they can compete in separate classes in the performance events. It has nothing whatsoever to do with breeding.

LOL...yeah, I don't ever thing that basic principal was in question....:confused: Just a discussion regarding how it differed from the other mixed breed registries. :)

You missed the point. They are not registering dogs. There will be no pedigree, no registration certificate, no records kept other than the dog and owners name, address, etc. They are not opening up another mixed breed registry. They will be issued a number so they can compete.

OK... I'm responding to the First post;

I say hats off to AKC! Breeders and Exhibitors can no longer operate in the "better than" bubble! Not if we want the support of the "general public".

With all of the anti-breeder laws being pushed in our states, I personally have spent more time than I care to admit writing letters and speaking at meetings against those who would like to see an end to breeding Cats and dogs. Its the support of the General Public, the mix breed dog and cat owners that most of us NEED!

Bringing them into the AKC is a perfect way to expose them to the pedigreed world and thus gain support.

The CFA has a group Called "Household Pet" Its wonderful to see all of the household pets show for rosettes and ribbons and points and they too receive regional awards at the end of the season, its so much fun! And the Families who show get to see the world of pedigreed cats from a whole other view! Its a wonderful opportunity!

I'm very excited that AKC is doing this! I really do hope it happens!

Um...what the AKC is proposing to do with this IS "anti-breeder." They are requiring that the dogs be spayed/neutered before they can be registered...?:confused: It seems like they are promoting the stance that although the dogs can be registered and can compete in events, they have to be s/n so they can't be bred...?
Unless I'm missing something, they are not promoting that the dogs should be bred.:confused:

Again, these dogs won't be registered. They won't promote breeding of dogs with questionable parentage. The AKC is a purebred registry.

I just have to say that it has always puzzled me why a forum devoted to a purebred dog can have so much anti-purebred sentiment.

Right...I get that. I was responding to another comment: Bringing them into the AKC is a perfect way to expose them to the pedigreed world and thus gain support. I don't see how that is the case when they are insisting the dogs be s/n. (Which I agree with! :thumbup:) I guess "registered" was a poor choice of word..."given an id number and allowed to compete in events" just seemed like a mouthful.

The more mixes s/n the better.:thumbup: Leaving the breeding to the experts is a good thing. I think it's nice for the AKC to allow mixes into some competition while still encouraging responsible breeding.

I might be missing your point but regardless if the AKC allows mixed breeds into some competitions, responsible breeders will never support the breeding of mixed breeds. Before anyone yells at me, we all love them but they shouldn't be bred. It doesn't matter how cute, how sweet, how smart, there is not the decades (in some cases hundreds) of years experience to have the knowledge to breed mixes responsibly and safely. I think the responsible breeders should be in the "better than" bubble because they are better than someone breeding and having no idea what they are going to get.
