Participating in the HSUS Lobby Day Tomorrow! Tomorrow from 11-5 I am going to the state capital to lobby for animal rights. I'm so psyched!! Here is the link so you can see if they have one in your area! I am meeting with 2 legislators at 1:30 and 2:30 to talk about dog fighting laws but I'm all prepared to discuss puppy mill legislation too. I am going with my friend Tracy who owns our doggy daycare! Humane Lobby Day: Frequently Asked Questions | The Humane Society of the United States I'll report back tomorrow night and let everyone know how it goes :) Perhaps my new career could be as a lobbyist? I'll bring my resume just in case! |
That is great! Hope everything goes well. It doesn't look like there is going to be one here in the next few months (I checked the event calendar)...... and Thank-you. :) |
I'm so excited for you - and excited to hear about it! I wanted to sign up for the AZ day, but I couldn't get off work that day. :( |
Fantastic Kim. I am so proud of you. So many people do the talk about animal welfare, but you are doing the dance! Don't forget to wear your big girl panties and stand firm! You will have a chance to use your special speaking skills. I will be eagerly awaiting to hear how much impact you and Tracey had! |
OH MY GOSH!!! Today was the BEST day EVER!! There were about 100 people there from all over the state, people had taken buses from NYC, Buffalo, Syracuse, all over the state! The 3 laws that we were told we were lobbying on were: 1. Making it a felony to be a spectator at dog fights (in NY it's only a violation now) 2. Ban Canned Shoots 3. Humane Euthanasia of Downed Animals BUT....... on Friday a new bill was finally introduced regarding puppy mills!!!! WOOHOO! So we got to lobby for that too and it was a tremendous success! We were able to get the Senator and Assembly man we met with to co-sponsor ALL 4 bills! It was such an amazing feeling to be actually doing something worthwhile. But it's not over....Friday & Saturday there is an event at the capital called Paws for Cause that has different vendors and booths and Tracy had already planned to attend for her shop but we were able to get another space where I will have information on these laws and petitions for people to sign. Then I plan to walk those petitions on over the the senator :) Now, if I could only make this a full time job I would be the happiest woman on the planet! |
Kim that is so awesome! Our's is next Saturday and I found out about it exactly 2 days after I booked our trip to Tallahassee for spring break the following freaking week. I was going to go with Lauren anyway but the thought of that drive two weekends in a row eventually changed my mind. I can't believe we are going to be there one week late. The worst part is we went to a HSUS grassroots meeting in Oct. and they told us about it then and I didn't put it on my calendar.:( I am going to be looking for it like a hawk next year. So, details, details. Did you learn a lot about lobbying in the morning? Did you get to talk personally to any legislators? I am so jealous- let me live vicariously.:p |

Yes, the morning was spent learning how to lobby and details about the bills we were discussing. Then we spent about an hour speaking face to face with 2 legislators who asked a lot of really tough questions but we ultimately convinced them to co-sponsor all 4 bills! It was exciting, exhausting and I loved every minute of it :) |
