Volcano dusts Anchorage with ash 2 Attachment(s) We have a volcano about 100 miles away, Mount Redoubt, that has been blowing up with increasing regularity lately. We'd escaped getting ash until tonight, when we got a dusting. It's not terrible, just a nuisance. Have to keep the dogs indoors when it's falling, have to wipe off their paws when they do go outside. Make sure they don't eat snow. The biggest problem is what it does to cars. You have to change air filters often. It can mess with automatic windows. The Alaska Volcano Observatory has an amazing Web site that tracks happenings. Here's a picture of a seismograph on the mountain. Isn't this cool? Each big blotch on the chart is a major eruption, which sends ash anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 feet high. The red lines generally indicate that the blast was "off the charts." Also, here's a photo by Bretwood Higman / groundtruthtrekking.org via the Alaska Volcano Observatory that shows lightning striking as the volcano was blowing last night. |
Wow that's awsome.. The lightening pic is really something to see. I have family in Anchorage and she said that it was pretty bad and the kidlets were having to stay inside because of it. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS, SOMETHING MOST OF US WOULD NEVER SEE..... Thanks..... Sharon, PIXI & SPIKE.. |
That is really cool! I love that picture! Sorry you have to deal with the ash though. |
That is just amazing!!!! Thanks for posting!! |
Glad you guys enjoyed the pics. I'm so close to it that I'm fascinated by it, but I realize not everybody feels the same way. My newspaper has a huge photo gallery if anyone is interested in seeing more. Redoubt: Volcanoes in Alaska | adn.com |
We thought about you guys when we heard about the eruptions. Thanks for sharing those photos and links. I think it's really fascinating, but I'm sure it can get old having to deal with the ash. I've read about how different volcanic ash is from regular ash you deal with in a fireplace etc... It's much rougher (is that a word?). Is it tough on your pup's paws walking on it? |
Wow what a cool picture! Thanks for sharing |
Cool pictures! :) I hope the ash doesn't get too bad though... :( |
Mike, I'm am so glad you shared those pictures with us! Truly fascinating! Volcanoes are one of those things that I'm sure I will never get to see in person so it's wonderful to get the opportunity to see it through someone elses eyes. |
I would LOVE to see that in person! |
Okay that pic is awesome! TFS! I hope the ash doesn't cause too many problems for you. |
Wow, that picture is amazing! I'll have to make sure my daughter and her hubby sees it. They've been living in Anchorage for the last couple of years and juuuusssst left about a week before it's eruptions started affecting Anchorage. They are here now (well, just left this morning for a week in DisneyWorld), & will be (back) here until the 18th of April. Then they are off to Misawa, Japan for 3 years. My son-in-law is in the Air Force. |
That picture is amazing!!!!!!!! I would love to see more! Stay safe. Sounds like a pain. |
Amazing picture, Mike! Thanks for sharing!! :] |

We didn't get any new ash last night, but the stuff from yesterday looks darker on the snow this morning as it's settled. I let the dogs out after the ash had stopped falling last night, wiped their paws when they came in, and there were still a few ashy footprints in the house this morning. We decided to cancel our weekly dog meetup. I don't think the ash is going to hurt them, but none of us liked the idea of having to bathe our dogs thoroughly after they romped around for an hour. A HUGE bummer for the dog community is one of the big dog shows for the season had to be canceled because the judges could not make it up here because of flight cancelations. And since it's considered an act of God, nobody gets refunds because the group still has to pay for rental of the downtown auditorium. |
Great pics. I haven't seen such amazing pics of a volcano before. Hope you stay safe and that is a bummer about the dog show cancellation and no refunds. |
That was a very beautiful picture. I love the beauty of nature, bad or good. Makes me wonder what's happening to our weather lately and is it the start of some serious things happening around the world. In southern CA. they are having a lot of trimmors too close to the San Andreas Fault line. Makes ya wonder! |
Mike I'm so glad you're ok ! I saw that on the news and was thinking about you - how is it now ? how are you ??????.... again - I'm so sorry about little Jack but he sure had a good family with you all and couldn't have asked for a better life even with the snow and all the Mooses Hope you and family are doing well - I have to catch up but you did cross my mind often lately - especially with your loss |
OK, that's enough! If it takes Jack's death and a volcano to get you back here, I don't know if I can do it any more! Someone else had got to pony up with some personal trauma if we want to keep Villette around :p Ha, all's well, V. The volcano is just a nuissance so far. A little extra dust in the air. It's no hurricane like you've been through, that's for sure. I knew the cloud was coming so I took them all for a walk right beforehand. It fell for a couple hours, then stopped. Now it's just a matter of wiping their feet off and keeping them brushed when they go outside. I hope all's well with you! Nice to see you around. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for posting that picture, Mike! I've been watching Mt. Redoubt on a live cam - but usually it is too cloudy or there is too much ash to actually see it. Here's my absolute favorite picture from my trip to Alaska two summers ago. I know you know that is Mt. Redoubt in the summer - but for everyone else, this is what the volcano looks like when it is behaving! |
I love that shot, and a terrific contrast to some of the pics I've been seeing lately! I'll bet it will have an entirely different appearance when it finally goes to sleep. |

you really do get some great shots - we need to just call you Mr. Nature - I always love your photos as does everyone else here Mikearoonie.....you sure live in a beautiful state but again - it's too freakin COLD there ps - it was 49 this morning in houston and I had full snow gear on :) |
Wow what a cool pic! |
ok mike - it's your fault I have a headache (from laughing) - I know this is off topic but I was on youtube and just saw your videos and that Poo Dance the cheering at the end had me fall out of my chair............ You my friend do the BEST videos  .... |

But first of all, those aren't my pictures. I, uh, borrowed them off the Alaska Volcano Observatory site. Unlike Palin and Russia, I can't even see the volcano from my house. :) Oh, thanks for the video props, but you're a full episode behind! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-hunt-vid.html |
I was thinking about you when I heard about the volcano! Glad you escaped the worst of the ash! Thanks for the cool pics! :) |
Wow! Those are cool pics. It's so amazing to see people still skiing in it! :p My hubby was around during St Helens eruption, he said the ash got on his oxidized red car and when he wiped it off the paint shined like a brand spanking new paintjob! |
