Donating Blood Anyone do it? I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to donate blood. My mom has been doing it as long as I can remember. I almost did in grade 13 but I had a cold and they turned me away. When I lived in the Soo you had to wait for a blood clinic to come to town but now that i live in a larger city- you can just go whenever. My only thing is i'm worried it hurts- I KNOW- i can save a life- get over the pain- but it is what is holding me back. I just know when i have to do a blood test- the longer they keep that needle in you- it burns! Anyways- i have to wait till mid april before i can donate anyways (then it will be a year since I was in the remote city of Monti Cristi in the DR teaching) and i AM AM AM going to go- i just need to know it donsn't hurt THAT bad! |
Donate Girl!!! I donate blood whenever I can. My nephew was diagnosed with Lukemia when he was 3 and needed various blood transfusions. The pinching pain I felt whenever i donated will never compare to the pain he went through everyday going through the treatment for the cancer. Its worth every drop off blood you give to see the smile on his face one more day ;) He is now cancer free and a big happy 9 year old boy. On a side note...I would donate my blood straight to the hospital because I heard that the red cross sells the blood to the hospitals. You will feel great after doing it, the people at the donation clinic are sweethearts. |

We don't have the Red Cross here- it's called Canadian Blood Services and they just give the blood to the hospitals- no selling. |
I resently started to donate, I am O- which the blood banks are usually very low on, only 7% of Americans have this type. O- blood can be given to anyone of all blood types and the only safe blood to give in emergencies when they don't have time to see what blood type a injured person is. But only O- type people can receive O- blood. Many years ago I need a blood transfusion and the small town I lived in had no O- in stock I almost died. They had to rush it by ambulance from a town over an hour away. So I think it's so important for me with this special blood to help others knowing it can truely save lives. All blood donations are so important. What a wonderful thing for you to think about doing, it makes you feel good after. I just keep saying to myself- it won't kill me :p might hurt for a bit tho so.. DOES it hurt? |
I donate also and it's not as bad as your thinking.......I just try and focus on something else , for instance......what I'm going to fix for dinner?....who are all these other people in here?....I should have worn nicer shoes.......I bet I can squish this ball down to nothing!......I should have peed first.....etc.etc..... You'll be glad you did, it's something to feel good about.....Good luck! |
Go for it!! I used to donate but don't anymore. The hospital I donated at was much better than red cross. They would always miss and then try to adjust the needle which is a NO NO!! But after so many times I have gotten alot of scar tissue so donating really hurts. One arm the needle is the same size as my veins so I am giving it a rest. But definatly I would recommend donating. Just think of all the lives you can save! :D |
I have tried to donate on several occasions but my calcuim level was too low :( for Red Cross. My personal physician says my calcium is fine..... I guess they just don't want my blood. |

I used to donate back then in high school when they had the blood drive and also during my college years as well. But I haven't donated recently. If there is a blood drive nearby I would definitely donate again. It's not too painful, it just feels like a slight pinch...just don't look when their doing it. ;) |

Also don't chew gum, mints or candy when you go. I learned this the hard way, it can bring up your temperature in your mouth and I had to wait another 20 minutes before they tested me again and I was fine. Also no lotion on your hands or arms, this can also effect the drop of blood test they do before you give blood each time you go. I was turned away last time because I have a tendency to be a little anemic and my iron was too low. So I have started to take a multi-vitamin to try to help with my iron levels. |

Thanks for the info on the gum and candy! |

I can't wait to give blood. I can't until June 5... counting down the days. I got a tattoo on the 4th of June and you have to wait 12 months. It hurts a little... and I always get cold but it's worth it. The last time I tried donating my iron was too low. They suggested a bunch of foods and supplements if I really wanna give blood. Once I can start donating again I plan on every 8 weeks, it's a great thing to do and they're always calling because their short on my blood type. |
I cant give blood. My lips turn blue, I feel the blood leaving my body and it makes so very ill and cant walk when its over..... Yes that is all in my head except for the lips turning blue.... but it happens when I try to do it:rolleyes: |
I'd like to but I can't. What year is this again, Red Cross? |
I have donated blood in high school. Its scary at first but after the needle goes in its nothing. I loved the little snacks afterwards they let you have lolol |

i want to donate badly but I can't since i am below what they require for the weight. One day, i will reach that weight..i know i will..lol |
My blood pressure is too low  Plus I am not sure, but now with the Lupus and all the other autoimmune issues, I don't know if I could even if by some fluke I developed a normal blood pressure. I am O- too (which can be a PITA when you have babies, esp when your husband is A+) so it would be nice if I could. |
hehe i lie about my weight so i can give blood. now i know lying is bad but i have a pretty rare blood type too (B positive) and i feel it is better to fib a little than not donate ;) i do not do it as much as i would like to because my veins are really small and unless the tech is really good, they will (1) not even bother trying or (2) miss and then fish around with the needle at which point i tell them to stop because it DOES hurt when they do this it does sting when they put the needle in but really, it is not that bad. just do not stand up too quickly afterwards. it hurts more than getting blood drawn at the doctors (i think because of the size of the needle?) but less than getting dental work done lol :) |
It's a great thing to do!! And it will definately be worth it! :) I've had many, many transfusions in my 16 years of life so far. And will probably have more in the years to come... But when I get blood taken at the doctor's (which is a lot... Once a month for now, was every two weeks, and before that two-three times a week ) it doesn't hurt that bad. Yeah, the pinch hurts, and if they fish around that hurts, too... :( But it isn't so bad, you get used to it. :) Since I have Wegener's Granulomatosis, a rare-rare autoimmune disease (normally rare, but even rare-er in kids), the doctors have to watch my blood levels constantly. I probably won't be able to give blood ever. Not that I really wanted to anyway! lol :p |
My husband does every 59 days.. I think that is how long it is. I can't give because I am anemic. |
Oh! Forgot to add... My dad gives blood all the time! He has to wait so many days in between, and when he can he gives as soon as he can! He also has hairy arms, and says that when it's time to pull the band-aid off that it hurts worse than the needle. :p |
Don't forget that they need plasma donations also......:) |

They stick a needle in each arm, and I think the blood comes out gets filtered and the rest goes back in, in the other needle... Not sure though... |
