Question about Nascar
 
(I say this as a Catholic)

Does anyone know why they pray before Nascar races? Is this just a long running tradition that they are holding on to? Is it safe to say most Nascar fans are Christian? Just with the way things are lately (Trying to take "in god we trust" off of the US money and in Canada trying to get God taken out of the National Anthem) it really struck me as odd that the whole crowd rose and bowed their head in prayer.

NOT looking to make an issue of this just wondering if someone had the answer. Thanks!

I think its just like any other sport well here in Texas anyways we pray before football games and other sports, we pray to keep everyone safe and not to be get injured. I don't know if that is what you mean or not.

really???? every sport???? wow- i have never seen anyone pray at any sport which is why i was SO shocked to see it on tv today....

Is it perhaps just a southern thing??? has no one complained that "i'm not christian.... "

Usually its not a prayer out loud its more like a moment of silence for the crowd, yeah there have been cases in the courts about it but I know that we would pray in the locker rooms before games out loud.

oh.... well the moment of silence thing makes more sense... but today on TV they had like a pastor there saying the prayer out loud.

I know they pray in the locker rooms before a lot of sporting events, but not sure about the whole crowd...we don't watch nascar, so I'm not a lot of help, but now I'm interested to know too!

lol I don't watch Nascar either- it came on after curling :p

I am just stunned... I went to a catholic high school and I know teams prayed before games but it was a fair assumption that all those playing WERE catholic- so there was no chance of offending anyone..

It is a long standing tradition that NASCAR has. They have said a Prayer at all the races I have ever watched or been to. I have been a fan for almost 30 years.

ok- so just a tradition- when probably everyone WAS catholic that started and now is just part of Nascar?? that makes sense! thanks!

The prayer is for the Good Lord to keep watch over them, not just a southern thing, they prayed a lot when I lived up north also. They need to keep Prayer in schools and on money, etc

ya i knew WHY they prayed- it just seemed to me- with all of the controversy over religion lately- that praying at such a NATIONAL sport would have been stopped- i mean it only takes ONE person to be like- hey i'm uncomfortable- for it to change- but i'm glad that if it is a tradition and no one is offended that it is continuing!

I guess it is just something nascar has done for as long as I can remember....As far as I know, there hasn't been any complaints.

We have the race on now, and everytime I have ever watched it which is ALOT they have always prayed. I love watching the races I always say a little prayer for the guys, they are out they driving crazy fast and it only takes a second for something to go wrong.

Not everyone that prays is catholic ;) And I am sure its safe to say that there was not a time that everyone was catholic. You just make it sound as if the catholics either started nascar or praying, or both, lol.
I am a very strong christian (non-catholic) and I pray daily....

If someone got offended over praying at nascar they can just choose to not pray, no one is forcing them. With all the beer drinking and crazy stuff that can go on there, I think praying is the least of things you could be offended about there.

I have never ever liked nascar at all, but knowing that they still pray before the race makes me dislike it a little less, ;)

I meant to say Christian- not Catholic- and i think i forget that the US is very different from here in Ontario where at one point- pretty much everyone WAS Catholic (which is why Cahtolic schools are publicly funded) anyways.. was only wondering how it all started.

They pray at college games too...at least they have at all the ones I've been to. (Not high school though.) It's just one of those things that's "always been done." (Um, excuse me drivers, but this crowd of over 100,000 is not going to pary for you today because there are a handful of us that are offended....yeah, right.) I guess if you don't like it or are offended, your best bet would be to pick a different sport to follow, not expect the traditions and sports to conform to you. (generally speaking)

I am still Thankful to see that their is still prayer out there. It is wonderful to see them prayer before this event. I would like to see it more often. :p

I agree- i too think it is great- but lately in Canada there has been a removal in all things "god" in order to not offend- so i was very very surprised to see prayer at nascar!

We'll I don't see Nascar giving into anyone about this and did you notice they still end their prayer in Jesus name. :D:D

I know they have a race in Canada each year...it will be interesting to see if they still do the prayer before the race for that one.

I take that back, it's not actually IN Canada, but very near the border (the New Hampshire race). They always do the Canadian anthem and whatnot at the beginning of that race too.
