Pet Peeve of the day I try to be a nice person, I really do, but just about everyday I find something new that irritates me. :D Today it is people that advertise their pets on kijiji, craigslist, or some other dog advertising website, and misspell the breed of dog. If you are a breeder, do you not think you should educate yourself at lease enough to know how to spell the kind of dog it is you are breeding? I understand that Shih Tzu and Chihuahua are commonly misspelled dog breeds (had to google chihuahua myself just to double check, lol) but if you are a BREEDER, wouldn't you know how to spell it? Shih Tzu does not have a cuss in it. I could never purchase a dog from someone who didn't even bother to learn the proper spelling. Sometimes I just feel compelled to write a nice anonymous message and post it on those places to let people know that they are spelling their dogs breed wrong, it is against the law here to place a puppy in a home before 8 weeks, and there are no such things as teacups. I always get a couple of nice thank you emails in response, but those are always followed up with more that try to tell me I am wrong, lol. Not hard to google spelling, breed specifications, or state laws regarding dog breeding. If they don't believe me, they can look it up  Don't worry, this only happens to me once a month usually. ;) |
I know exactly what you're talking about, I've seen that many times. My Grandparents used to breed chihuahuas many years ago, and I have a shih tzu, so do know how to spell those. I have seen pekingese spelled wrong by breeders many times. LOL |
I agree with you 100%! And not only should they know how to correctly spell the name of the breed, they should at least know something about it. Man that irritates me. I have a shih tzu as well and had someone who "used to breed those" tell me that if I trimmed his hair he would go blind! Oh, and she also informed that Norman is an "Imperial" shih tzu. ("Imperial" is to the shih tzu world what "teacup" is to the yorkie world btw) |
Lol. I know what you mean. I have a dashchund. I spell it the way the AKC does, but I know I've seen at least 10 ways to spell it while searching online about them. They have a lot of nicknames too. Weiner dog, weenie, hot dog, doxie. Did I miss any? :p |

So what makes an "Imperial" Shih Tzu so special? |

Basically if a shih tzu is "under 9 lbs" (remember the AKC standard calls for 9 - 16 lbs) it is considered an "imperial". In this case "imperial" = small, tiny, and "special". They do just like they do with the word "teacup" in the yorkie world. Slap that word in front and charge and extra $500 - $1000 for a super tiny dog with potentially a lot of health problems. |

Thank you too MindieRose! |
Woah! 9-16 lbs? My mother in law's shih tzu is a whopping 30 lbs! But he is not overweight, he has a huge frame and is very healthy. |
