where is the best place to buy prescription glasses? We just got back from the eye doctor, even with my state vision plan my husbands glasses cost 640 bucks! That included the exam, transitions, bifocals, and snap on sun glasses, but still....when its my turn, I think Im getting the exam and going somewhere else for the glasses got any ideas |

I always get them with my eye doctor like your husband. I had a bad experience once with an outside source makeing my glasses. Prescriptions need to be centered and the measurements must be exact where the glasses sit on your face. Takeing the less expensive route in the begining cost me more in the end. |
I feel for you, I've worn glasses for many years and they are very expensive. I did have eye insurance where I worked till I was laid off. Even with my insurance it was around the amount your husband paid for his glasses. I've always gotten my perscription sunglasses at the same time I've gotten my everyday glasses. But the way the economy is right now, I can understand you wanting to try & find a more inexpensive place. Good Luck to you. :goodluck: |
Eyeglasses I get mine from Walmart, my husbands and my daughters from Walmart, no vision insurance so this is my cheapest route:cool: |
I have gotten mine at Costco. They have done a really good job. Not as expensive as everywhere else. |
Walmart for me too. I've always had good luck with mine there. |
I think many eye glass places rip you off. You can look on ebay for frames and go to Walmart for lenses. I wanted new frames that were Dolce & Gabbana, in the local mall the frames alone were almost $700 CAN without lenses. I went downtown to the chinese district and found the frames for $340 including taxes. Got the lenses at Walmart for less than $100. So the glasses I wanted at Lenscrafters that would of cost over $1000 I got for less than $500 for the exact same thing. So check around. The glasses I got were expensive but I think you can find great deals other than the major eyeglass store have. |

Linda, Costco has always filled our prescriptions with lens and frame, so far they have done excellent fitting lens to frame and their frames are very reasonably priced. Jack will be getting his new glasses there next week, I am praying that my Opthamologist will be able to finally fit me so I can get mine. Jack appreciates the anti reflective coating, I sure wish he could get use to the progressive lens but he has such a difficult time adjusting to them :( I think that is due to the difficulty which he has with Parkinsons, controlling the movement of his head and having to look through the definate area within the lens. I use to wear the progressive and loved them. Good luck on whereever you go. We don't have any vision plan insurance either to help us so we was happy with Costco's price and quality too. They always stand by making them right if there is any problem. Jack has the Optomotrist at Costco to do his exams and has always been satisfied. I do have to add I won't complain a bit on the $ amount for new glasses for myself, as long as they can finally fit me, enabling me to see to do the fun things I have so missed out on doing, oh gosh I won't know what I will get busy doing first :) Patti and Jack |

Also, I've known of people who'd make claims with more than one insurance provider. Say, redeem the coverage from your own insurance ($100-150) and then redeem it from your spouse's (another $100-150) then that already covers $200-300 of the cost of your one prescription. Insurance generally covers lens but not frame. From my experience, stores don't mind how they invoice, just that they do invoice it. ;) This is assuming you both have insurance covered by your separate employers, etc. |
Last week I went to a new eye care store in the area called America's Best Contacts & Eyeglasses. If you buy 2 pairs of glasses, you get the eye exam free. I bought 2 pair of glasses, one pair was by 9 West, the second pair had the magnetic clip on sunglasses ... my total bill was 233.00! I don't have eye insurance but with this place, I didn't need it! My last exam 4 years ago, with my optometrist was over $450 for one pair of glasses and eye exam. I couldn't have been happier with the place and would recommend checking them out if you have one in your area. |
I just happened to see a commercial last night for $99 for two pairs at Sears. Don't know the details but it's worth a look-see. |
I had to get glasses for the first time a year ago, I went through walmart |
I bought frames and lenses a few years ago at the doctor's office. Very expensive pair of glasses, the lenses were trifocals and transitions. Less than a year later the frames broke and could not be fixed. I didnt' need new lenses, just new frames. The frames had been discontinued, and the doctor's office said no other frames would fit my lenses, so I was just out of luck. I was wearing my old glasses, when I was in Walmart one day. I was in the optical shop in walmart and don't ask me why, but I was telling the guy who worked there about my sad story of having very expensive lenses laying in the drawer at home, that I could no longer use. He said, bring them in, we find frames that will fit lenses everyday. He said he coudln't guarantee that they would have frames that would fit my lenses, but he would try. I brought them in, they found new frames in less than an hour, and guess how much they cost. $35.00! I kid you NOT! They didn't charge me for putting the lenses into the frames, they only charged me for the new frames. And they are the BEST frames EVER!!! I've worn them for 3 years now (my eye RX rarely changes) and I love them. When I need a new prescription I will DEFINITELY be going to Walmart and I hope they have these SAME frames. They've got my business now. |

I got glasses from zennioptical 1st time I ever did this but I love them. I got everything you can get and the cost was only $98.00!!!!! If I went even to Walmart it would have cost me over $300.00. My husband got his from Walmart (got everything the same as I did) and his was over 350.00. I saved so much I'm thinking about getting another pair just to change my look. :) |
