A MIL vent So last Sunday (Feb 22nd) I brought home my little shih tzu, Norman. He is 3 months old and 2.9lbs of pure love and joy. MIL thinks he is the cutest thing ever. So THIS Sunday (March 1st) she gets a puppy. A chihuahua who is "mixed with some other small, furry little dog". She is 5 weeks old. :( First of all, I am upset because the first thing the MIL started talking about was breeding her and how she could sell the pups for Christmas. (this poor baby won't even be a year old then). Secondly, she is CONVINCED (because the lady she got her from said so, and we all know ppl who give away 5wk old pups never, ever lie) that this baby is only going to grow up to weigh 3 pounds. Ok, there is NO WAY this little girl is going to weigh 3lbs. Right now, at 5wks, she weighs a good 2 pounds. She is the same size Norman is - minus all the hair. Third, she dismisses the size thing with a wave her hand saying, "Well, if she gets too big I'll just give her away." I finally had to get up and leave. I couldn't stand to hear another thing about "Oh, I hope she doesn't get much bigger than she is now. I want her to stay this little." and "I hope she has puppies so I can sell them and make money for Christmas." Ya'll should have seen the look of total disbelief on her face when she looked at Norman and said to me, "Don't you hope he stays that little?" and I replied, "No. I do not. The AKC standard for shih tzu is 9 - 16 lbs and I hope he makes it there. I want a healthy, happy dog, not one that I have to worry about constantly." HER reply was, "Well, if this one gets over 5 lbs I'm getting rid of her.":mad::mad::mad: I don't think I could have truly HATE anyone, but my MIL pushes me awfully darn close! |
Wow, that lady is harsh! I feel bad for the little puppy. Maybe you could get her some reading material? Like problems with breeding tiny dogs, and the expenses for things like c-sections, or breeding a dog thats still a puppy. If she honestly loves her puppy, then she would never treat it this way. My head would be spinning if I had to deal with someone like that! |
Oh I have offered that. I have also talked and explained until I am blue in the face. She doesn't care. She just doesn't. Plus she thinks I'm "just making it up" because I'm jealous her dog will be smaller than mine. |
I feel for you but one thing I learned through rescue is that you get more with honey than angry words...even though at times I have blown up at people because it is so inhumane what some people do.:thumbdown |
That's why I finally made an excuse and left. I didn't want to blow up. I KNOW a lot of the things she says and does are based soley on ignorance. But the woman just will not listen to reason. She has the uncanny ability to hear only what she wants to hear and absolutely nothing else. |
Well, lets just hope that when she wants to breed the little one that the people she asks think she's rediculous. |
My family are all backward when it comes to animals. Sometimes I am surprised we are related. They think I am a crazy dog person. |

Welcome to my world! LOL :p Oh, she has already worked out the breeding thing. See, her sister got the little male, and she knows someone who has a female and a male they could breed with. I just feel so sorry for the little puppy she has. I just can't understand being able to just disgard an animal because "it got too big" or whatever. |
GRRRRRR I don't blame you for being mad!!!!! Boy oh boy!!!!!! I would have been bitting my tongue!!!!! So many things are wrong with this which you have pointed out. 1 She is only 5 weeks old! 2 Breeding for money 3 Breeding so young! & obviously not knowing anything about it 4 Breeding so little (if she is going to be the 3 lbs like she thinks she will) :D 5 Wanting her to be little GRRRRR  6 "Well, if she gets too big I'll just give her away." I hope you can knock some sense into her!!!!! Good Luck! ;) |
