Vegitarians ???? I was just wondering are there any vegetarians here at YT ? I'm not a vegetarian because I do eat chicken and fish , just no red meat...BUT my son who is 14 is seriously considering become a vegetarian . I'm not sure what to do ...I don't want to stop him , because I support all he does...but I'm just not sure what he will eat. I usually cook chicken/ fish for me and I will cook red meat for dh and my other sons , but if he goes all out vegetarian ..what do I feed him ? I guess I am asking about protein sources and things like that. I just worry because he is so young that he wont get all he needs. Any advice for a worry wart mom :D |
Hi, I am a vegetarian and vegetarians can find protein in a bunch of food sources, some might surprise you too! Grains, nuts, beans, vegetables, tofu and other meat substitutes just to name a few. Here are a few sites that I can think of that might help you see the other foods that give you protein!Vegetarians in Paradise/Vegan Protein Basics/Vegetarian Protein Sources / Charts Vegetarian Diet: Vegetarian Protein, Myth and Reality, Savvy Vegetarian Vegetarian Protein Sources - Getting Enough Protein - Protein for Vegetarians - Vegan Protein Sources - Where to get protein on a vegetarian diet Also I suggest that you look at your local Library for information on vegetarian diets, I found a wealth of info from the books I came across! |
I forgot this one it has a chart on it with age and how much protein one should get.The Vegetarian Society - Information Sheet - protein |
I'm a vegetarian and so is my 14 year old daughter. If you have any questions after reading adorame's links just let me know. Getting adequate nutrition is very, very easy. |
Thank you I will check out the links provided:) and I have found some books we are getting. I love to give him freedom in his choices, but in this case I told him I wanted to read up about it to make sure he could stay healthy enough for a growing teen :) I feel better after reading. We have an appointment with his doctor soon to discuss everything he wants to do. Thanks again for the links and the help. anybody else , feel free to leave your opinions :D |
I'm a pescetarian (sometimes spelled pescatarian) - so I eat fish, but no meat. Maybe if he's not ready for vegitarianism yet, he could go pesce for a while, then veg? There are so many great non-meat dealios out there now, it's really easy. Make sure you check out Quorn - omg - DELICIOUS! :) |
Thanks :) He is moving slowly , he will still eat fish and maybe chicken ( like me) while he takes the time to read and decide what actually he wants to do. I was of course in overprotective mom mode and worried about him not eating enough  But he is smart , so I know he will take his time and make a well thought out decision. I have always been proud of his decision making skills ( even if I wasn't happy with the eventual decision ;)) so I Know he will think things through before he dives in. |
I'm vegetarian too. Adorame gave you a lot of info with that link. You'll be surprise how many vegetarians there are here in YT. It's nice of you to support your son on his decisions of becoming vegetarian. Not everybody is supportive about somebody wanting to go veg. :) |
I just noticed I spelled vegetarian wrong in the title :p Thank you veguroev..... I figured this would be a good place to ask seeing as none of my friends are vegetarians and couldn't really give me any insight. We have always had a healthy diet , his motivation seems more because of his love of animals ( it's like he just figured out he was actually eating them :p) I'm not sure what his final decision will be about all this , but whatever it is , it will be his decision. Yeah , we are finding out that some are not to supportive of his eating this way ( I don't know why they have a problem with it , it's not like he is taking away their meat ) But they just HAVE to say something  and more often than not it's half truths and scare tactics ( all vegetarians are unhealthy seems to be a big one they love to say) I can't understand why they care what he eats ( or doesn't eat) as long as he is healthy. :) |
