dentist horror stories,,,,

Yesterday I went to the dentist, to re-do 2 old fillings,,,well he opted to do 4, I thought I was gonna die, first I could feel the cold water he was shooting in my mouth ( I have very sensative teeth) and I about came out of the chair. he said " Oh can you feel that?" YES, I said. then after the first 2 I relaxed cause i thought he was done,,NOT.... he did 2 more, I was in the chair for 1 hour and 50 mins. I have had braces and all of my wisdom teeth out,and this was worse than any of that. Then he flips me up and says " Ok you're done" I was so light headed, and my legs were all rubbery,, I staggered to go pay,, then I about died,,, 195.00 , when was only expecting to pay for 2 fillings.... ( he threw in the 4th one for free) cause it about killed me! Oh ya then half way into it I had a coughing/choking attack, with all that stuff in my mouth, flat on my back, NICE!
So needless to say, I went home, not back to work , so I missed out on 3 hours of pay... real nice...
Anyhow, needed to vent, anyone ever had 4 fillings at once? I didnt know it was possible. Any other dentist stories??
Thank GOd it wasn't a root canal, which I have never experienced. nor do i want too!

I had a filling fall out and I'm getting it replaced and its time for my cleaning so there is no telling what else they will find.. I have real sensative teeth too. So I'm scared to death!! I hope my insurance pays the biggest part!

Hope you are feeling better now!!

i have to go on october 2nd. but i'll survive, i think. i've never had a cavity, and never want to! i hope you're feeling better today!

I've never minded going to the densist too much. I guess its because when I was little I had tons of cavities so I got used to going. A couple years ago though I wasn't too happy after the visit. I can't use the gas it makes me sick so they are only able to give me the shot. Well I'm used to it since that's all I've ever had but this time he had to give me like 6 shots. He couldn't seem to get it right and it wouldn't deaden the spot so ever few minutes he'd come back in and be like "are we ready yet?" and then when I said "no, its still not numb" he'd pull out the old needle again. After about the fourth time I was ready to do it without being numb. The worst part was when the numbness went away and I could feel the pain in my jaw from the shots. I couldn't open my mouth for like two days.

Sorry about your visit, I hate the dentist too! I feel like everytime I go to the dentist it is a horror story, I hate it!! I hate the cold water, why do they not have it warm?? I hate to get my teeth cleaned because of it it hurts soo bad, I feel like I need to be numbed up for it. And I have a hard time going numb too, I have had to suffer through at times because I will not go completely numb.

I had a bad experience when I was little with dentist.. He was rough with kids and would not allow the parents to go back with them... Take in mind I was only five (or four maybe) and scared to death. After me crying for 30minutes I finally went back without my mom. When he went to give me the shot in my mouth I started to wiggle a bit so he held me down hard with one had and gave me the shot with the other. I dont think I have ever been so scared in my life... So I dont like the dentist at all and I'm 23 now.

My son goes to a different dentist now for that very reason. I have to drive about 30 - 45 min. but, it is worth it. He is high functioning autistic and a few years ago this particular dentist wanted me to take him to a hospital put him to sleep to have a couple of fillings and silver crowns on the teeth. Ethan never really liked him and when I heard him one day talking to a little boy that they were having a really hard time with the x-rays those hurt. It's wasn't so much what he said it was the way he said it.

I basically told him off right there over Ethan I told him no way was he putting my child too sleep to do this procedure without trying first to do with either novicane or gas. I ended up reporting him to the local ADA.

Now Ethan goes to this wonderful dentist. He loves her and all of her staff. She was able to do the procedure without any problems in her office. What is so funny is that she was a hygenist before she starting practcing and she use to work for the dentist I took him too previously. She quit because she didn't like how he treated patients & staff. She even took the time to call me at home and to check on Ethan. She also did his first cleaning.

So now he dosen't mind at all going to the dentist. He just went a few weeks ago for his 6 month cleaning. No problems at all.

You guys are really giving me some good feed back. My husband is a dentist and I manage his dental offices. He is a wonderful dentist and we do lots of things for patient comfort and distraction and we try to make sure every patient has an enjoyable experience with us....yes, that's right, I did say ENJOYABLE.

My husband is really funny and loves people and our staff is the best, very caring and compassionate. We offer "spa dentistry" so we do head, neck shoulder and temple massage with the procedures and we have soft blankets, pillows and massage pads. We have hand wax treatment we do when you are having a cleaning and we have aromatherapy and candles so you don't have that awful dental office smell.

We offer snacks and refreshments and after a long procedure over an hour we offer a starbucks or a jamba juice or a milkshake on a silver tray since you are hungry but too numb to eat. We also give lip balm and we do hand massages as well.

We have DVDs and head phones for tooth whitenings and other procedures and we have waterfalls and fountains for a relaxing, soothing atmosphere. We also offer sleep denistry also known as sedation dentistry for a truly comfortable experience.

All of this and we actually charge less than the competing dentists in the area!!

I would look for a "spa dentist" in your area if you are afraid or have had a bad experience. It is worth it.

That sounds awsome but I doubt we have that kind of dentist here in Johnson City...
But I would love to try it!

HOLY CRAP!! I would have given anything for just one of those options!! I didnt have pain, but Im so tense the whole time, anticipating that I might, My hands have a death grip on the chair the whole time! Then my throat and mouth got so dry, thats when the coughing started. And he leans ya so far back, then after the almost 2 hours, with all the blood that ran to my head, he flipped that chair up and " You're done" I about fell down, Im serious, I looked in the mirror in the car, and scared myself!
What you have going sounds GREAT!

More and more dentists are offering a "comfort menu" so patients enjoy their visits more and take better care of their oral health. I would check with your locall dentists. If more people ask maybe they will atart doing it too.

That is wonderful. I have a good friend that is a hygenist. I need to send her a copy of this. It's great that you do all those things to make patients comfortable.

My son goes to a pedodentist. The atmosphere there is great. The waiting rooms of course have game systems. The main area has a mural of the ocean and anything you can find there painted on the walls and ceilings. Even a small row boat attached to the ceiling.

They have game systems in the back for the kids while they are waiting on their procedures to start. They also have tv up in the ceilings over their chairs for the kids to help keep them relaxed.

Needless to say he dosen't mind going to the dentist at all. I have a problem getting him to leave though.

ouch, ouch, and ouch again! I never truly understood the mentality of a dentist until opening up our own dental laboratory.

All I can say is take care of your teeth, get those teeth filled when you can because if you don't....Then you will be looking at dentures/partials, crowns, briges, etc and talk about $$$$$$$ That is even a bigger ouch!
