Oh wow, you were diagnosed with melanoma? I had a friend who died from it at an early age, I'm glad you were treated successfully, and good for you for helping to spread the word. Not sure why you posted the link the way you did, but here it is for those who don't like to cut and paste. Melanoma Research Alliance |

Anyway, tell us more about your experience, did they catch it in a routine checkup? What kind of treatment was involved? |
I used it about 30 years ago when they first came out, and my doctor had a fit, so I stopped. Thanks for the info. |

I grew up on a farm and worked outdoors much of my childhood not taking care of my skin. Skin cancer has been a worry for me. Didn't tan in my adult life. Our daughter has also stayed away from any sort of tanning, wearing sunscreen. When she was in 1st grade she had a tumor in her lung area. The doc told her that once the body has the ability to produce abnormal cells that there is a higher chance of it happening again. That info impressed her and she's stayed out of the sun/tanning beds. I am glad that you are okay. Wish more young people would be as aware as you are. Hugs. ~Joanne~ |
My dad used to be very vain and owned a tanning bed. He tanned constantly. He has melanoma, and has had to have a lot of skin biopsies. Needless to say he sold the bed and wears sunscreen all the time in the summer now. I always wear sun screen and try to educate people, but vain people get mean and defensive when you try to talk to them about the dangers of tanning. My aunt owns a tanning salon and you cannot talk to her about it at all. It's sad that so many people are willing to risk their health just so they can be tan. Not to mention people that tan constantly have terrible looking skin. It seems like once they hit 40 their skin looks like leather. I'll stay light skinned, healthy, and young looking thanks! |
I've heard that tanning beds are so dangerous. :( Very sorry you're dealing with this. Thank you for spreading the word! I am naturally tan and I tan very easily in the summer. I've never burned, and because of this I am very neglectful about wearing sun screen, which I know is not a good thing. |
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this! My mother lost her fight to Melanoma 18 years ago. She was a tanning bed user and was out sunbathing whenever she could. Losing my mother at the age of 13 to a preventable disease and being a fair-skinned redhead has taught me to be careful with my skin. I wear a face cream with sunscreen every day. I also apply sunscreen whenever I know I will be exposed to the sun. I am very proud of my pasty complexion and take great comfort in knowing that I will age better than those who tan! :) Congrats on being cancer-free! |
When I was younger , I wanted to be tan like my friends but never really tried to tan because I knew being very fair with reddish hair , I would just burn up ! ( it only takes one sunburn to know you don't want that experience again :p! ) So sunscreen was always my friend !! I don't really mind being fair skinned now. |
