LayOffs One of our major not-for-profit hospitals just laid off 200 people, mostly managers and directors. From all appearances they appear financially healthy, investing in very high tech robotic surgery etc. I just got to thinking and wonder if some companies are not using the bad economy as an excuse to contain costs and increase their bottom lines? The excuse the CEO of the hospital gave was "a shift in the global economy". That seemed a bit lame to me. Its scary at any rate. My company said no raises at all this year, not even cost of living raises, as an effort to try to avoid laying off people. What are your thoughts on this? |
I don't know what to think anymore. I work in healthcare for a large specialty practice. Our health ins. coverage changed for the worse this year and we are only getting a cost of living increase this year. No lay offs yet. The I area I live in depends heavily on tourism and the "snow birds" coming to Florida for the winter. We also have one of the worst real estate markets. |
Wow, I work for a smaller local hospital...hope that never happens here. I can't even imagine what would happen if the directors or managers would be laid off...scary thought. |
Yikes! How can hospitals be laying off workers when there appears to be a tremendous shortage of health care workers? Around here if you don't stay with your family member while they are in the hospital there wouldn't be any care. When our 21 yr. old daughter had spinal surgery 2 yrs. ago she wouldn't have been walked, gotten up to sit in a chair, received her meds, had her bedding changed if we had not been there 24 hrs. a day. I even washed the floor in her room. It was soooo filthy. If I remember right the R.N.s had 12 critical care patients per nurse. It was terrible. Couldn't go to any other hospital because this is where BlueCross and BlueShield would pay. Needless to say the little survey review we had to fill out was quite negative. Not a good experience. The economy is not doing anyone any favors right now. I am sorry that you are so affected. |
