Point and Case: Why I didn't want a purebred YORKIE. ...Or ANY terrier for that matter. Every Yorkie I've ever been exposed to has been crazy territorial. To the point that it's nearly obnoxious. Last night put the icing on the cake, and now I have a "bad taste in my mouth" about ever owning a purebred terrier of any kind. I've had a Toy Rat Terrier who was just as bad as our friend's dog. But sure as heck never BIT anyone. Here's what happened... Our friends have a Yorkie. He's the most hyperactive, HORNY little dog I've ever seen in my life. He's really just a bad-mannered dog. I never allow them to bring him to my house. Well last night they invited us for dinner and dessert and wanted us to bring Reese. I told them OK, but I don't want their dog exposed to her (He'd hump my baby like crazy!!!). Well sure enough they had their dog out all night. All he did was torment Reese. She wanted no part of it. Well about an hour before we left, Reese was laying next to me, and their dog had his nose so far up her butt I'm surprised she didn't bite him. Chayce (my 3 year old SON) walked over to pet Reese on the head, and within a split second their dog lunged toward chayce and BIT HIM IN THE FACE! I was BEYOND furious because all night i'd told them their dog was getting annoying. Chayce was bleeding like crazy, but "luckily" it was just 2 small teeth marks on his lip. Yep. Their dog bit my baby boy on his freaking MOUTH! They gave us his paperwork to show us he's up to date on his shots, we cleaned chayce's mouth out, gave him some benadryl.... It was just a bad situation. I love my friends to pieces, but their dog. Not so much. |
I'm sorry your child was bitten. Many small breed dogs that aren't exposed to young children regularly are very leary of them. It's not limited to terriers. That being said given your strong opinion towards their dog and his reaction to children...perhaps next time you should decline an invitation to their home. |
It sounds like your friends yorkie hasnt been trained and has bad behaviors. I dont think hes a representative of all yorkies. Mine dont behave like that and they are not territorial at all |
I'm really sorry your child had gotten bitten....I don't mean to sound unsympathetic but you need to take on some of the responsibility here...You knew this dog was ornery and can be a pest and you still took your dog there....If this other dog has always been a grizzly bear don't expect a teddy bear, it is what it is.......Know that you know this dog bites I hope you keep your child way also.... |

I'm really sorry this happened to you and your son. But, like others have said, I don't think this is a good representative of the breed. They just didn't train properly. It's not the breed's fault, it's theirs. :( |
I'm really sorry that happened and your little boy must've been in a lot of pain. :( I'm glad that it wasn't worse. Like others have said, though, this is NOT a good representation of yorkies. Tucker has *never* humped anyone EVER - and neither have the other 2 yorkies I've had. None of them have ever bitten anyone either. This yorkie is obviously poorly trained. Please don't blame the entire breed for something *one* yorkie did. |
Funny, because every book I've read. Every breeder I've met. Has told me, "Be careful of terriers. THey're territorial and difficult to train." It's just in their blood. Just like Chihuahua's are territorial. I did my research before buying a dog, and all the results said the same... Doesn't help that the owners are lazy as crap. The "best" part?! THEY WANT TO BREED THIS DOG!!!!!!!! how can they BREED it when they can't even control HIM. |
Given all your "expert" advice...why would you chose to purchase a terrier mix? Given this is a yorkshire terrier board I really doubt many will agree that they are horrid dogs. Our passion is all things yorkie. |
Yorkies are difficult to potty train...if that's what they were talking about? But they're very intelligent dogs. They learn tricks and commands in NO time - as long as the owner puts the time in. They don't come to you trained! lol as for being territorial...I've never heard of that. They definitely bark when someone's at the door (or walking by the house, or starting their car, or when a leaf falls 6 blocks away :p), but I don't believe I've heard of a viciously territorial yorkie. They sound like very uneducated dog owners, IMO. The dog is completley untrained and they want to breed him. I don't doubt that they're good people...but some people just weren't meant to have dogs. I'd like to remind you that you're on a yorkie site, so I highly doubt you'll find anyone who will get on here and say "You're totally right! Yorkies are nasty!" |

I am so very sorry that you had such a bad evening. What I can't understand is why we are blaming the "breed" or collection of breeds. This was a very undisciplined individual dog as was his owners. But..... at any time during the evening you could have politely made your excuses and went home thus avoiding the dog. I don't understand why you would have taken Reece knowing the situation and I really don't understand why baby Chayse was allowed to get so close to dog that was volitile and undisciplined. |
I am so sorry your baby boy was bitten....I would be livid if it was thier dog, my dog, whoevers. With that said NONE of my yorkies have ever acted like that......they all listen like little children at least in front of us and we have never seen any evidence of problems while we were out. Potty Training can be hard, but other than that I have enjoyed EVERYTHING about this sweet, silly breed. Sorry again for your experience, Angie |
