YUCK!! I have to start antibiotics. I finally went to the Dr. today after being on/off sick for the past freakin' month (YUCK) and of course I have a sinus infection so my Dr. put me on a long course of antibiotics (amoxycillan sp??) he says it will most likely take 20 days which really bothers me because I know that antibiotics aren't that great for you and I don't think I've ever had anything but a z-pack. Any advice? Should I eat yogurt? Can I still take my vitamins? Do I need to do anything different? |
Yogurt always helps me, I usually don't remember it until I have symptoms of a yeast infection and then my little brain pops into gear, but I highly recommend it. Hope you feel better soon. Aren't you flying soon? A sinus problem can be so painful if you fly. |

And no, I am not flying until I go to Phoenix in Feb. I flew after Christmas (when this all started) and thought I was going to DIE. It was HORRIBLE. Now I have been told it is actually dangerous to fly with a sinus infection. Now they tell me!! I could have gotten out of my stupid sister-in-laws wedding!! Thanks Nancy. |
Last spring I had a bad sinus infection and I was given 2 weeks of amoxicillin. Didn't work. 2 more weeks of something else. Didn't work. Then I was sent to an ENT given something else and they did a nose biopsy. Turns out I had a staph infection in my sinuses. YUCK! Then had a month of some other kind of antibiotic. Was fine all summer and Fall comes and get another Sinus infection. Go back to ENT does another biopsy still have staph. Another month of antibiotics. Had another infection after Thanksgiving and gave me another round of antibiotics. So far so good. |

Did they put you on plain amoxicillin or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid? If you're on amox/clav it should be potent enough to clear it in 10 days. Resistant cases usually need 14-21 days...I agree with Nancy and you should eat yogurt every day while on the antobiotic to help replenish the good bacteria. You can still take your vitamins. (I'm a pharmacist) |
Amanda- take my advice- you need something MORE than yogurt- i was on antibiotics off and on for 3 months because of a sinus infection and the antibiotics caused a very horrible- well- woman issue:rolleyes: i was miserable- You need to take pro biotics that have a least 5 million active cells per capsule- this was the only thing that helped and if i ever have to take antiobiotics again- i'll be taking those starting day one! |

I would just take your course of antibiotics and see if you feel 100%. If you don't, I would go to a specialist. |

Ugh! Every time I take Amoxycillan I get a yeast infection... EVERY TIME, so annoying to go to the doctor and pay for the antibiotic then have to go back to get a prescription for a yeast infection. Last time I had an infection I just ate raw garlic and took garlic pills, haha. The raw garlic was rough but much better than a yeast infection. |
Aw man! I dislike antibios too - but for a sinus inf. - ugh - you really need them. They can be SO resistant too! Since you have to be on them so long, I'd really think about getting a probio and taking daily so you get a therapeutic dose of them. What a bummer. I hope you get rid of it on the first round!! :) |
You can find acidophilus at your local grocery store near the vitamins, or a health food store. I would suggest the chewables that are refrigerated at the health food store (they are yummy too), but if you just pick up the capsules at the grocery, they will work too, just not as potent. It is good to take these on a regular basis anyways as everyone has yeast in their systems, but if there is an abundance it can cause many symptoms that you would never even think to associate with yeast, such as brain fog and fatigue. You can also get probiotic shots (like drink shots, not needle shots) and drinks at the health food store, but overall that is much more costly than the pills. If you eat yogurt and take the supplements, you should not show any signs of a yeast infection. |

It is not a big capsule at all, if that helps! I have taken other probios that do NOTHING. This one is a WOW (for me, anyway). And, it does not need to be refrigerated either. :) |

There is one animal probio out there that says it contains 29 proprietary strains or ingredients. Ya, I really want to give my dog 29 things that I don't even know what they are. I would HATE to be on antibios fo rthat long. :( |

The animal ones are soooo complicated. Many nutritionists feel there are "species specific" strains that are necessary, and others feel they are what they are for everything. The ones I have my horses on are excellent. Don't think I didn't considering just taking those..... |

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this yet..... if you're on birth control pills, be extra careful. Antibiotics can render your birth control pills useless! That's why I hate to be on antibiotics. My mom always gets a yeast infection when she's on antibiotics. When the dr. prescribes the antibiotic, he automatically prescribes something for the other thing too. Good idea on the probiotics! I'll have to remember that to tell her. |

I just got over a month long sinus infection. I tried the amoxicillin, but that didn't work. My ENT put me on Bactrim,a different antibiotic, and that did the trick! And the good thing is there wasn't any neg. side effects from it. |
