Not an emergency but... HELP!!! Kind of a long story so stick with me please! I want my YT friends' advice. My dad hurt his back last year and is now going to a chyropracter. He's gotten to know the assistant over the past year and a few months ago she got a s**t-tzu. She told my dad about it and of course he told her that I love dogs! And that I'm looking for one of my own. She's been wanting to talk to me for weeks now and she's determined to help me find my dog. I finally spoke to her today over the phone. She told me she could get me a yorkie puppy for less than $500. I was amazed and I asked her "HOW???" Her response, "I know a lady that I see often and she's always selling puppies at the bank. She has a lot to choose from, like s**t-tzus, maltese, and sometimes she has yorkies. If not her then I know some other guy that sometimes has them." What's my obvious response...."Where does she get all these dogs from????" Her response "Oh, I think she breeds them." Automatically I go into educate-mode. But there's a problem, some of the stuff I want to tell her about irresponsible breeders gets lost in translation. I'm trying to tell her in spanish (I'm fluent but clumsy sometimes in my translations) about the possible problems and how I don't want to give them business. But I think I came across as a snob. :( Did I do, or what I attempted to do the right thing??? Or will she now tell my dad what a snob his daughter is and say that I'm ungrateful for not wanting to accept her help? I don't think I approached it correctly!:(:( sorry if I misspelled some things! |
Don't worry about it, you did the right thing! Explain to your dad what happened and why you don't want to take the "recomendation". Ask him to try to explain at his next appointment and take comfort in the fact that you are not supporting this "greeder"!!! |
I think you did the best thing the right pup will come along |

If she says anything to your dad having him tell her that you have decided to rescue instead. ;) |
At $500.00 a pop (pup?) I don't think she is a broker. I do believe she runs a big ol puppy mill though. Stay away and if your father doesn't understand after you explain your feelings then show him puppy mill footage from the Internet. that should convince anyone to stay away from them. He can then, in turn, explain it to this poor misguided woman. |

I just wanted to clarify, my biggest concern is that she took it the wrong way. I know better than to even consider purchasing a puppy from a lady like that. I'm concerned that the chiropracter's assistant will think I'm a big snob and will treat my dad badly. I am trying to rescue though. I'm in no hurry to find him. (but if my perfect pup shows up today, YAY!!!) I did call my dad soon after I posted here and I explained to him what happened. He assured me that I speak perfect spanish, and the information was good and to the point, nothing got lost in translation. If she then took it the wrong way it's really her loss, and maybe one day if (god forbid) her furbaby gets sick she'll understand the message. Oh well, a slip of the tongue on my part for automatically going into educate-mode. I hope she still treats my dad and my mom, with respect, since I know not everyone welcomes the information about BYB and puppymills with open arms. Just in case I ever encounter the same situation, is there a nice way of educating someone? |

And my dad does understand and he agrees that we should stay away from these kinds of breeders. (consider it a victory!) Of course I showed him how bad things could get, but this was a while ago, I think sometime after I joined YT. |
