Appendicitis info...anyone?
 

I've been doing some reading about appendicitis and I know the appendix can rupture but can it just flare up and then all the symptoms go away?

as far as i know- no- once you have an issue with it it needs to come out- i also know it is not something to mess around with- my young cousin had hers rupture and she was very close to dying had they not got her into surgery as fast as they did.

Not that I know of. I have never heard of that happening.

My husband, sister, and mom all had theirs out and they had pains for several days, then went to the hospital to get it out.

From what I have heard, if you are having problems it is best to go in and let the doctors decide, because it can be fatal if it ruptures.

I have never heard of appendicitis healing up on it's own with out having surgery to remove it. It usually comes on fast to the person and then you have a "window" of time before it ruptures to get it removed safely with out complications that comes with a ruptured appendix. At least that is how it was explained 4 years ago when I had to have emergency surgery to get mine out.

I just came home from the hospital on the 10 of January.I had to have an emergency appendectomy,my appendix had ruptured.
It started 6 mths ago when I went through ER for stomach pains and shortness of breath.they treated me for constipation and gave me pain meds,sent me home.OK Dec 29th pains started again same as before went in ER and they said constipation.I told them I was not constipated then(6 mths ago) nor am I now, I go regularly at least 2 times a day.The doctor told me I can go every day and still be constipated so I listened to the experts and went home.Jan. 1st severe pains again shortness of breath ER took the ambulance this time.
I don't know what they did this time that they didn't do the other 2 time I went in but I had to have surgery that night because my appendix had ruptured.I almost died as this toxic poison was leaking into my stomach cavity.My stomach was so bloated from the poison that is why I couldn't breathe.I would guess to say YES! It can flare up and maybe leak small amounts but this is risky and life threatening its better to just schedule a removal.The longer those poisons sit the worst it looks for the paitent as far as recovery because of additional complications and damage to other organs.

The symptoms to look for are vague and varies according to your age.Abdominal pain should always warrant a check for appendix problems,this is a hard to diagnose and life threatening problem if it bursts.

GOD has not finished with me yet,that is why I am still here.

If you are having symptoms is best to go in NOW! your duodenum (sp?) contains many toxins when released, which can happen with an appendicitis if not treated! please let us know how you are!

journey826...that is what I'm talking about. The symptoms I'm having are so similar to several different things but they do match appendicitis symptoms too. I thought I was told a long time ago that your apendix can flare up but then clear up but if it gets bad it has to be removed. My gallbladder is already gone (from the first time this happened) but the symptoms didn't go away...they told me they would take my apendix out when they took my gall bladder but when it was over they said they couldn't find it. How weird is that?

My sister in law almost died from a rupture as well. She was in and out of the hospital for several days beforehand. Everytime they said it was gastroenteritis (regular stomach "flu"). Why oh why is it not one of the first things they check when symptoms are so severe?

That's the problem MindiRose. The symptoms of appendicitis can be similar to several other issues like gastrointestinal, gall bladder, chrone's disease, ovarian issues and others so it's hard to pinpoint.

I've had ovarian issues for years, and had pains on and off for just as long. Well my OBGYN finally decided that whatever was going on was not showing up in any of the tests and ultrasounds so I had exploritory surgery, among other problems he took out my appendix because he said it was rock hard and covered in scar tissue. He said it was caused from flare ups but mine never ruptured.

My understanding of it from nursing school (which was a few years ago) is that it technically can "flare up" By which I mean cause symptoms. These symptoms could lessen or worsen over time but that once its started "flaring up" it could burst immediately or next week or years down the road. Once the symptoms start you want to get it looked into. Ruptures are serious, hard to predict, and can be deadly. Be careful and best of luck.

If you are having flare ups it is time to schedule a removal.Once you start having problems it will not go away or right itself so to speak you are now dealing with a ticking time bomb.Symptoms are vague and they don't have much in research about the appendix.

btw if you plan a removal they can use the laproscope where you will have minimal scarring and its supposed to be less painful. Mine was an emergency and they cut me wide open,I had been leaking those poisons into my stomach.I also had 2 drains put in so my stomach looks like frankenstein,but I will never go in for a tummy tuck to improve it as the pain and recovery is more than enough for me once.

I was turned away twice from ER and told I was constipated.
seems I have a high tolerance for pain that is why they did not suspect my appendix,seems its so painful they cannot overlook it.(never thought I had a high tolerance for pain,how do you measure that OH WELL)

its different for each person I would say but lower abdominal pain severe or not should warrant speculation.
