Do not beat yourself up!!! You don't have a crystal ball. What if she had driven and had an accident - then you would be saying, "why didn't we walk". And even if she'd driven, she might have slipped on the ice in the parking lot or walking up to the clinic. There are a million scenarios that you can create. This was NOT your fault, it is just the unfortunate way things happened. Be there for your sister - she will need you now - I know you will be the best sister/support!!! I hope all goes well for her! :) |
AWWW Hun... Im so sorry this has happened, It's not your fault. Keeping your sister and her baby in my thoughts and prayers. |
ARGGGH:mad: She still has'nt been for surgery and she has been NIL by mouth for over 24 hours!!! She's starving!!! To top it off she is suffering from morning sickness and the only thing that really helps is to eat little and often so she is feeling even worse because of that! The problem is that they are sooo busy, there were literally hundreds of people admitted the same day as my sister due to accidents on the ice and the staff are working really hard to see to everyone. Surgery is going on through the night but she was told she was a priority, I mean theres only so long you can starve a pregnant woman!!! But she could be called to surgery anytime so they need to keep her NIL by mouth! Obviously the surgery is important, its just adding to her misery and pain to be starving and sick on top of it all. She is putting a brave face on and laughing and joking but last night when the tea trolly came round she asked us to draw the curtains round her bed and I could see how much she is suffering:( I just can't wait til its all over and she's home. |
Bless your sister's heart! I agree, that's a long time for a pregnant woman to go without anything to eat! I'd be chewing the blanket by now! I hope by the time you read this, the surgery is over and she's recovering nicely. |
I"m so sorry she is suffering, it can be terrible to be on nothing by mouth waiting for surgery. She is really suffering since she is nauseated too. Poor thing. Hopefully, the next time you post, she will be finished with surgery!!! |
She finally had surgery yesterday (Tuesday) but its not over yet! They managed to "fix" her bones but she will need another OP on Friday to put the metal rods in! I just hope she is in and out quickly and not kept waiting around and starving again! I'm at home all today waiting for her zimmer frame to be delivered here, so its ready when she finally comes home. She was laughing and joking when she told us about the nurse asking whether she wanted a 4 leg zimmer or 2 leg and wheels "WHEELS please" she said with a cheesy grin but I really don't know how she is feeling about it. She has always been alittle quirky and does'nt like to follow current trends but she is still a little conscience of the way she looks esp. as she is quite tall at 5'10" and now she will be restricted to using a zimmer frame for a while, shes not the exhibitionist type and won't enjoy extra attention. Hopefully she won't need it for long. I'm off to visit her tonight, I'm sure she will be feeling better with some food in her belly and her ankle bones are "fixed". |
I'm so glad that part is over with! Hopefully will go quickly Friday and your sister can relax a little. Keep us posted - will continue praying for your sister! |

There has been further developments!!! To be on the safe side my sis was taken for a ultrasound scan this morning to check all was well after her first op. This was her first scan and she was very surprised to be told there are TWO heartbeats!!!:D:D:D She is estimated to be 8 weeks gestation and will have her official dating scan at 12 weeks. The sonographer said that at this stage one heartbeat could be a reflection although its unlikely and its more probable that one baby is hiding behind the other. There is only one sack which means that if it is twins they are identical:DI was the first person she told-even before her hubby:p I'm sooo excited (and a little envious-I always wanted twins:p) I'm off to see her later, I can't wait to congratulate her in person!!! |

Oh wow, that IS cool. If it is twins (and yes, I'd be envious too because I always wanted twins! ;) ) then she's in for a rough recovery, I'm thinking. The extra weight of the pregnancy might be hard on the healing of her ankle, don't you think? It just sucks that she'll have to spend so much time recovering from the broken bones when she should be floating through an exciting pregnancy. But just so that everyone is healthy, that's all you can ask for! |
I got back from the hospital an hour ago:D My sis and her hubby could'nt keep the smiles off their faces and everyone kept getting the giggles:D She had a scan pic but it was difficult to work out (she did'nt get enough notice to drink the 2 pints of water usually recommended before hand:rolleyes:to make the scan nice and clear) we have another 4 weeks to wait for a better scan:rolleyes: Her hubby is a little worried about money, since my sis will be off work for poss 6-8 weeks and even though she will get sick pay its still a big drop in their income. With a mortgage to pay and poss two babies to save up for its gonna be tight! I got rid of most of my "big" baby stuff already so I'm gonna ask my friends if they have anything and keep my eye on ebay for bargains:D I'm gonna save up some money for her too though she does'nt know it:D Thanks for all the well wishes its her last OP tom (found out today that she won't need another to remove rods-they're staying in) so hopefully by early next week she will home and her recovery can really start! |
OH HOW EXCITING!! TWO BABIES!!! I know she/you must be just beaming!!! :D We call that a "walker" in the States - I've never heard it called a zimmer (and I'm a nurse!) |

 Two babies!!! WOW! I am so thankful that she and the babies are going to be OK. Congratulations! I am keeping her in my prayers! |
I feel sooo helpless!!! Ok so my sis had her 2nd surgery today to insert the metal rods and plates so I just rang her to check how she's doing and hubby answered. He said shes not feeling too good and then I hear her:( crying in the background:( She is in sooo much pain and only has paracetamol which barely takes the edge off:( I did'nt know what to say:( I wanted to talk to her, comfort her-be her big sis. But her hubby said she was'nt up to talking and theres nothing else I could do except tell him to let her know I'll ring tomorrow:( And now I feel helpless and useless and heartbroken for her. I know he's her husband and I don't want to interfere, I just wish that I was there to give her a big hug and let her know I'm there for her:( |
Surgery to insert a rod to hold a bone is painful. Since she can't take strong pain meds due to the babies, it is very difficult for her. She will get through it, but it may not be easy. Each day will get a little better. I'm so sorry she has to endure this. |
I've gone through the ups and downs with you on this thread. I will keep your Sis in my thoughts so that pain isn't too unbearable. I'll keep the Babies in my thoughts too. Brought back memories of when I told my family I was expecting Twins, we couldn't stopp giggling either. The very best wishes to everyone and don't beat yourself too much over this. She will get through this and soon it will just be a story the Twins will hear about. Take care, |
Thanks everyone for your continued support. I'm going in to see her today and I'll update when I get home. I still find it surreal that a little slip on the ice can result in all this, its crazy!!! |

We have said that same thing ourselves! When my mom did the same thing, while she was laid up in bed with her leg, she ended up developing an absess on her colon which required emergency surgery, and then a couple of months later, a more extensive surgery to remove a small part of her colon. It was like a terrible domino effect, all from a tiny slip. I am sure that your sister is going to recover great from this! She has all that happiness of having those babies growing inside of her! People heal much quicker when they have a positive attitude. I am sure she is going to bounce back! |
Update! 1 Attachment(s) Good news she is feeling a little better, she is still in alot of pain but in good spirits and coping:D I wanted to post her pic-its not very flattering, she is a little puffy and sweaty:rolleyes:and putting a brave face on but I thought you might all wanna see who you have been praying for:rolleyes: God willing she will be home tomorrow:D |
I forgot to mention that they gave a GA for 1st OP but did'nt want to risk another so she had the rods inserted while awake:eek:They gave her an epidural for the OP but since that wore off she has had nothing but paracetamol:eek: At least one good thing has come out of this-giving birth to 2 babies in 6-7 months time will be a breeze-and at least they will be able to drug her upto the eyeballs if she needs it:D |
Gosh! Your poor sister! It's unreal how one's life can change in the blink of an eye. I'm so glad she got through the surgeries okay and sorry she's in so much pain. I'm sure the fact that she is having twins helps her through all this, looking to that joyous event. I will be praying for her quick and full recovery! My aunt broke both bones just below the knee and also had steel rods. It was a long recovery for her, but she is also much older, so she had that going against her. Sending hugs to you...please don't feel guilty. Accidents happen and if only we knew ahead of time so we could avoid them. |
Thanks for being there!!! Quote:

My sis is still in hospital! The dox never got round to seeing her! Hopefully she will be able to come home tomorrow-all being well. |
She is syill NOT home GRRRR!!! The dox seen her and told her she could come home yesterday, but they never got round to fitting her final cast ( they had to wait for swelling to go down after surgery) So we're back to hoping it will be today!!! |
