Question for a nurse or someone in the medical field ok this is what's going on with my daughter. She's 17 yrs.old she had a stomach virus all day yesterday with vomiting and diarrhea. she might have had some fever last night for a short time. This morning she felt better but still weak some. She has on her left side (torso) a red spot about the size of the palm of your hand and it kind of looks like a rash (sort of) and a very small blister. she complained of pain and i couldn't touch it because she said it was so touchy. Well it looks like shingles. so i looked it up on the internet and read some about this. what I'm confused about is whether to go to the doctor or not. That is my question. It hasn't got any bigger since this morning and that is the only spot. it is possible for her to have this because one of things i found reading about shingles on the internet said someone was prone to shingles if they had chickenpox before the age of 1 yr. well she had chicken pox when she was 8 weeks old. well what do you suggest i do about it. Take her to the doctor? or does this clear up on it's own? thanks for any answers |
If it is shingles it could spread and she would be more than miserable then. I would give the doctor's office a call tomorrow. If it is shingles, the sooner she can get started on meds the better. Hope she feels better soon! |
If it's only one spot, maybe it could be a spider bite or some other insect bite? When I was bit by a spider, it originally was a red color and was very sore, then it turned black. I'd take her in.... it never hurts, you know? |
I doubt it is shingles at her age. While the chicken pox virus does lie dormant in the body for the rest of your life and does reappear as shingles, it generally does not affect young, otherwise healthy kids. It mostly affects immune compromised and the elderly. I would bet this is a cyst of some sort, and would put hot compresses on it about every 1-2 hours today and triple ABT oint. If fever, and increased redness, drainage, or severe pain, take her to ER. Otherwise if it does not change, and no other symptoms, I would follow up with your regular doctor when the office is open. Shingles usually appear in a band of blisters that are very painful. On the chance that it is she should avoid contact with anyone that hasn't had chicken pox. As Ashas mom said her age is one of the things that makes it questionable. |
My soon to be d-i-l is going through nursing school. Most of the times when I ask her something, she says the same thing, go to the Dr. Nurses/Drs can't guess at things like this without seeing them in person, please get her checked out |
My best friend had shingles her freshman year in college. She would of been 19 at the time. If I remember right, she just had two spots on her lower back. They were very painful to the touch and made her very achy. She went to the doctor and they gave her medicine to help clear it up. This past year, they starting bothering her again. I would take your daughter to the doctor. At least then, you'll know for sure what is going on and hopefully she can get something to help with the pain. |
Shingels is usually more than one blister, but maybe it's just starting. My friend's son had shingles when he was about 18 y/o. I agree - see the doc! I hope your daughter feels better very soon. |

It sounds like a spider bite or shingles - although it doesn't sound like the typical shingles presentation. I would get her to the doctor as soon as possible, no matter what it is. It's better to be safe than sorry! |
It doesnt' sound like the normal Shingles presentation, but it could very well be. Either way I'd take her to the doctor soon since Shingles can be spread to anyone that hasn't had chicken pox and if its not shingles it could be something else that needs a Dr's attention. |
thanks for all your advice. last night all the red was gone and a little spot is left like a burn mark. I'm going to take her if it don't clear up. I've always had to watch her because she has always had senstive skin her whole life. little things come up and we don't know what they are. i don't think it's shingles either. no speading and it seems to be clearing up. thanks you guys your the best. will watch it and see. of course my doctors office is closed today. i'll have to wait til mon. unless it starts getting red again over the weekend. |
Glad to hear that it is clearing up - definitely don't think it is shingles now - it woudln't be getting better. Could be a spider bite that is healing well. I'd watch it and see what happens. |
I would be conserned about MRSA. My best friends daughter had a couple of those blisters on her abdoman and when she took her to the doctor, they were glad they seen her when they did. It is a very resistant infection and you do not want to leave it untreated.
