We got lucky with our first dog.. other his neuter and yearly shots, he cost us very little until he got older. When he turned 9, he cost us well over $3000 in a year for a major surgery, and then medications to keep him alive so we could enjoy his company just a little longer. Many people told me I was insane to be paying $1500 (my parents and I split the cost), but all I could say to them is how could you not? Would you deny your CHILD a surgery they needed, their only chance at survival, because you couldn't afford to?! My dog was my child... My yorkie will be my child. I may not be rich (far from it) but I'll always be prepared.

Just because a dog is a certain breed or a mutt there is no difference they both take time to train and groom! My mom has 2 "mutts" and I dont think they are any better then my Callie who is a full yorkie! Puppys take lost of time no matter "mutts" or not!

The puppy was playing in the backyard with the neighbor's dog...well the neighbors dog dug a hole under the fence and escaped. I think that if you cannot afford to provide for your dog...be it food, vet care, etc, then owning one is not the best option for you. But I don't think that means you don't deserve one. I think that everyone deserves the unconditional love that a pet provides, but if you dont' have the means to take care of one, then that's not exactly in the best interest of the animal.

(I actually thought you were referring to the purchase of the dog with your other comment.)
