red velvet cake!? So I am the official cake baker for all birthdays for single soldiers in my husbands platoon. Up until this point its been chocolate cake with choclate frosting, jello cake, stuff i know how to make. Today's request for the 22 birthday of my friend Marvin is.....red velvet cake. My question is...what is it? haha. I think its something from the south possibly since he's from Texas? Anyone have any recipes or at least an explanation of what it is would be GREATLY appreciated:) Especially by those that have to eat my creations:rolleyes: |
Definitely Southern It definitely comes from the south and it's delicious! The cake is cocoa with red food coloring and usually a cream cheese icing. I've seen cake mixes for it but if you check Food Network or Epicurioius, you can find recipes red velvet cake : Food Network Wishing him a Happy Birthday and sending thanks for everything the military does for us. |
It's from the south and it's wonderful. I have two recipes, one with the cream cheese and one that has a whipped butter frosting. Both are delicious. Check out southernliving.com and good luck. Hmmm...might just make one this year. |
They do eat it more down here, but, i did notice last time I went home to the midwest, they had the boxes of it in the grocery store too. Here's a really good website, where you can find just aobut any recipe Allrecipes - Recipe Search |

You guys are awesome!:thumbs up:yorkietal I'm not going to lie, We definitely went for the easy way out this time and bought the one in a box. (i'm such a slacker.) Mostly because the Commissary didn't have buttermilk and I don't know what it looks like in German stores. So as soon as I can find buttermilk I will make another one for some important reason and let you guys know how it goes because let me tell you...it sounds DELICIOUS!:) Thank you for all your recipes or hints to find recipes. Wylie's Mom...I love you blog. I'll add it to my list of random blogs to read for my own personal amusement:) |
Bleah. They actually want that cake? I've had it. I'm a Texan. I don't like it. I heard it's made with beet juice. :p lol!!! Give me a good old fashioned Carrot Cake anytime!!! :) ok........i'll shut up now........ |
Easy Buttermilk When I don't have buttermilk and want to make the easiest Irish Soda Bread ever, I add lemon juice to milk, 1 1/2 teaspoons of lemon juice per cup of milk. I gives the right flavor and we're happy with it. I love the blog Wylie's Mom does also! |

It is a southern recipe that has come with us as we've left the southern states and moved elsewhere. My grandmother and then my mother and now I make this cake for birthdays and special occassions. I've been know to accept bribes for the recipe.;) Just don't let the cake get dry or it's ruined and then you just have to eat the frosting since it's already made. Oh so sad! NOT.:D |
Red Velvet is my Dad's favorite cake! Most of the time, we're lazy too and just use a boxed mix but once Mom and I actually made one from scratch. FYI-be careful with the food coloring or your entire kitchen will end up red! (lol mom and I are pretty messy cooks:D) Personally, I think they are best with cream cheese frosting! |
I just made one last week, lol, my daughter requested one for her 8th b-day. They are great, and really i think not hard to make at all. |
