Need cellphone help (please) My DD had her phone stolen earlier this semester at school...right now, she is just using one of those pay as you go type phones, but that is really going thru the minutes with all of her texting.:thumbdown My MIL is getting my DD a new phone for Christmas:thumbup: so I am needing help on deciding which one to get.... My DD likes something that you can mainly just text on (she rarely ever calls anyone anymore) and something that is also an mp3 player (where you can hook it up to your computer to upload songs - since she has sooo many songs on her laptop - AND that she can plug her gel ear buds into it. Internet, and other extras are NOT needed for her! She said she just wants a stylish phone for texting and to take the place of her ipod too. She was looking at the blackjack2, but I didn't know if there were any other good phones out there that matched what she is needing/looking for. Also.....has anyone ever bought a phone (for the higher price) to NOT have to do the 2 year contract? |
Oh mercy...my daughter's phone could LOSE the call capability and she'd be perfectly content. :rolleyes I don't know if anywhere even offers less than 2 year contracts....seems like they all do....that's how they get ya. Or I could be wrong... |
I think it is better to not be in the contract, so I pay close to full $ for my phones. The advantage of that is when you buy an expensive Blackberry or iphone usually (I use AT&T) the salesperson can give you free phones for the rest of the people on your family shared plan. Depending on who you have your coverage with you should be able to find some great phones for your daughter, you might be able to upgrade your phone and get her new phone for free! |
We would be w/ AT&T We went to one local AT&T store the other day, and were just shocked at all the options and phones. I didn't know if anyone knew of any phones that would fit what she wanted. I noticed that the phones had the option of no contract, but the price for the phone was pretty high... I was just trying to think ahead...two years, whatever phone we get her will be very outdated or lost or broken or not wanted....so didn't know if the no contract/higher price would be a good thing or not. Course, while we were there, the sales people bombarded us...and really pushed the blackberry bold (?).....aurgh.... |
I just up graded my palm centro to an iphone. The centro was great, I had no problems with it, I think just about everyone has that phone now! The keyboard was rubbery and perfect for texting. You do NOT have to have the internet to make the phone cool. I used it for calling and texting only and it was nice. I liked it because it wasent a slider or flip phone which ment less to break. Also if you go with a popular phone and insure it, replacing it will be fast and easy. My boyfriend had the same phone and he was a little rough on it and had a few issues but it was because he dropped it so much! I droped mine a few times and it was no biggie, Brady even chewed on the screan for me and it worked perfectly. If you want I will send you my boyfriends old phone to check it out, we have no use, except to recycle it. |
I would check on the contract thing, you get great deals on phones by sigining contracts. If you know for SURE that you dont want to switch providers in the next 2 years I would sign one for the break on the phone. Also, check to see if by upgrading only her phone your other lines are not extended in the contract. I just ran into that problem with Sprint. We switched last month to AT&T because of service area, and my line was under contract but the line I added as a family member was not because there had been no upgrades. So I lucked out, instead of paying over $500 to cancel 2 lines of service I was only responsibile for mine. |
cellphones are so expensive! we have sprint and my daughter lost her phone as well:( she left it on the bus and now because I didnt have the insurance on it they want to charge me full price for another, and she just upgraded in august! so now she has my phone and I have no phone lol. I would do the contract as well better price on the phone. |
Well, I say AT&T and my MIL just told my Alltel... so I can't remember what we had before...I am bad  I'll have to dig out old statements. DD is looking at the BlackJack2 (att) because some friends have it and told her that you can hook it into their computers to put songs on it (instead of always having to buy songs from the phone) and use your gel earbuds. OR The blackberry pearl (depending on the music uploading). She is really wanting to be able to plug a phone into her laptop to add songs to it, since she has sooo many there...and use those little gel earbuds. sigh....I get so overwhelmed.... On a bright side...my MIL said that she THOUGHT she could just add my daughter's phone onto her account..idk...she said she was talking with the alltel people today..... |
I don't know anything about them, but my old one broke a week or so ago and I bought an "Unlocked" one off Ebay for cheap and it works just fine. But I do a pay-as-you-go plan thru Tmobile. So, ... if someone texts alot thats probably not for them. But maybe Ebay has some w/ no contract, etc? I see they even sell SIM cards on there. Who knows what they do now to get around long term contracts. ;) |
Who is the carrier? My DD just LOVES her Sprint Instinct!! |
rany from sprint or a blackberry pearl/curve |

If she texts alot, I would get a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard, it makes it much faster. I have alltel, and I love the service. I have a motorola q, which is not the most stylish looking smart phone, but I can text really fast, and can use it to check my e-mail, etc. I have a 2g card in it with some music on it, and the motorola bluetooth wireless headphones (THAT is a GREAT gift), but I use the wireless headphones with an adaptor in my ipod more than with the phone. Using a smart phone as an MP3 player really drains the battery...and I'm scared I will be left with a dead phone in an emergency! |

Ohhhh...I didn't think about that! I guess, I just assumed that if you get a phone that is like an mp3, that would be better than carrying around your ipod/mp3 player too. dang it...another thing to look into now! :D:( |
what cell phone company are you with? AT&T? |

The phone she has before was AT&T, but we always had issues w/ the bill (they would had on a lot)...so DH is thinking Alltel for the next on because MIL has it and is thinking she can add my DD on to her plan. |
Palm Centro... I have a pink one and I LOOOVE it. It has MP3 capabilities and is good for texting... which is mainly what I use it for. |
Jenn if you decide to go with an unlocked phone through ebay, make sure you get a reputable seller recommended to you. A few years ago I washed my daughter's phone (ruined) and bought an unlocked through ebay. It didn't work. I returned it and they exchanged it but that one only worked around a week. They were great about taking it back but how many times does anyone want to deal with that. Luckily my husband needed a new phone for work and she was able to just take his phone and we could be done with it. Also check Amazon. I got our last phones through them and you are still getting AT&T phones (or whatever carrier you want) and you get your plan through Amazon too. So in my case I was getting AT&T phones and an AT&T plan just through Amazon. The plan rates are the same but they have MUCH better deals on phones. After you receive your phones you deal with your carrier directly for everything and Amazon is out of the picture. You can still get insurance through AT&T and everything is handled just as if you had bought the phone at an AT&T store. |
