Animal Cruelty? So, I watched the videos at goveg. :( I see that they are made by PETA. The footage can't be denied, but what I would like to know is, is this just the worst of the worst or is it happening everywhere? I think PETA has a tendency to make a big deal out of things that they shouldn't and I really don't fully trust their "research"? So, does anyone have any non-PETA information about animal cruelty to cows, chickens, pigs, etc.? What are the laws in the US about this? When they are using those inhumane methods, is that illegal or are they within theirs rights? Any links? Not the Humane Society either please...they are too close to PETA and that isn't going to do me any good right now. Or I should say, I'd be willing to watch more videos from these organizations but can't take what I am seeing as 100% true without other sources... Thanks Oh, and please no PETA, Humane Society or meat-eater bashing in this thread.;) I have Googled but there is so much to sort through and when things come up, it is related to one or two companies...hardly a reason to get mad at the whole industry... |
I think if you google large scale farming or agriculture, you'll find what you are looking for, independent of peta/humane society, etc. There is a chicken factory in southeast mo. There is a lot to sort through. Most, not all, large scale practices are similar, from what I've read, but smaller farms are more likely to have more humane practices. Their "product" is usually is more expensive, and I think as a society we aren't ready to pay more for this. Maybe because societally we are not aware.....juliet |
Here is a link for you: Factory Farming | Farm Sanctuary This one has an interesting ticker, it shows the number of animals killed since you opened the webpage (quite shocking, actually): FARM - Farm Animal Rights Movement The reason the ticker is interesting is that (in reference to your first question above), when you see types of mistreatment caught on film - one, two, three times - you have to then put that into perspective in terms of the large scale of how it *is* indeed happening all over. An analogy would be - when a person writes a letter to a TV program expressing an opinion, the producers consider that opinion representative of the larger scale - so they consider that 3,000-5,000 opinions, depending upon the show. So, my point is: while you *are* seeing some of the "worst of the worst" - those things are happening all over, at factory farms - sadly. This is a UK organization - and they are eons ahead of us, in terms of trying to treat animals with care: Compassion in World Farming I don't know if any of this will help you, but there ya go, my friend. :) |
I'm not a big crazy fan of PETA but no one can deny the videos and they do put the word out - for that - it's a good thing |
I'm anti-PETA, but that kind of abuse happens all over the world, all the time. Not only to farm animals, but to fur animals, circus animals, "pets", and pretty much any living thing that gets in the way of mankind. It is not illegal in most places to abuse animals and those laws which do protect them are rarely enforced to the fullest extent of the law, even in otherwise progressive countries. These animals - poultry, pigs, and cattle - are considered commodities and product, not living things. It's really a sad, sick world we live in sometimes... |
