Sewing Machine I'm looking to purchase a decent sewing machine---not a cheap one, but nothing too expensive either. Does anybody know of a good place to find one? I don't know how to use ebay... thanks! |
my parents got me mine at walmart. I heard that they are slowly phasing out their sewing stuff. It was around 100$ i do believe, although not sure since it was a present. I've had it for about 2 years and it works great for general sewing stuff. Its a Singer Simple. |

So I promise i'm nto stalking you, but i just read your other post about using it to make clothes for your furbabies. :rolleyes: I would definitely recommend using patterns at least to start if you aren't experienced. Maybe just breaking down one of their old dresses/shirts to use. I've found it harder to make clothes for my furbutt without a pattern because i'm not used to the cut of things. Just a thought. Thank you :) I've owned two singers before and they worked great (got rid of them when I moved)...so would definitely consider another one...and walmart has decent prices. So that is good. What do you do with your sewing machine? Are you able to sew through thicker fabrics, such as fleece? Can you embroider at all? or bead? thanks! |

1 Attachment(s) Hmm. Well I sew pretty much anything. Fleece works fine no problem at all. I also made slip covers for our chairs using a thicker furniture fabric without a problem so its pretty heavy duty. I have never done any embroidery or beading on it so i haven't a clue if you can. I'm not as good as i used to be, too many years without 4-H:rolleyes: You can find patterns for dog stuff at joanns fabrics. Simplicity and McCalls have them i do believe, but they're pretty basic. I'm by no means a pro, but i started with a baby t-shirt and then folded it into the correct proportions. Like folded the stomach up so he doesn't pee on it, and shortened the sleeves. Then took it apart and use the pieces for my basic t-shirt pattern. The picture was my very first attempt at a jacket and the seams are pretty sucky, but it was more a test then anything. :) I'm sure there are others on this site with ALOT more experience than i have though best of luck! |
That's very cute... hehe your york is adorable. I hope that I can learn by myself---I'm thinking of taking 4 or 5 classes...but that won't be enough to make me half way good. So I have to rely on learning on my own. BTW:is Priority mail taking longer than usual. I ordered a bag from a YT mail and she said that she shipped it out on friday and I still haven't got it!!! I'm getting worried because it was kind of expensive :x |
I think that you'll remember more than you think as you get back into it. i certainly did. Alot of it is also trial and error. i've made some pretty questionable things and then the next time I know to double fold my hems or whatever. I'm sure classes would certainly help though. and thanks for the compliment on my furbutt! :D I haven't a clue on the priority mail thing although its entirely possible with Christmas coming up. I live on a military base in Germany so everything we order goes to NYC before it comes here and takes at least a week usually two. |
I was never allowed to take home ec in school....don't ask...My DH finally bought me a sewing machine after begging for a few years. I taught myself how to sew using the book it came with...after a few hundred pillows, blankets I am now good at window coverings, clothes and such...so if I can do it....someone that already knows the basics and lingo for sewing is sure to have success! |
