Gypsy & Me | 11-28-2008 08:21 AM | My Local No Kill Shelter Last night laying in bed cuddling Gypsy I was listening to Kayla snoring () in her oversized basket filled with three feather filled people pillows, wearing her new nightie and snuggled in a fleece blanket... both totally spoilt! I was thinking about what they were going to have in their Christmas stocking, how much fun they were going to have playing with my Mum's Yorkie, Ellie, all day and how much better Kayla's life must be now she has her forever home.
But what about the less fortunate dogs? :(
My local dog rescue has 25 kennels and is one of few no kill shelters in the area. I thought about the poor dogs that will spend their Christmas there... for some it will be their first and hopefully last... but for others if could be the first or even second, third or fourth of many. :(
Years ago when I was at school I remember we did a "Christmas Shoebox Appeal". I'm not sure if everyone knows what this is, but you basically get a shoebox and fill it with toys, treats, toiletries, etc, and you wrap it up all nice and write the age and sex of the child the gift was made up. Then the shoeboxes are given out to children in orphanages and every child gets a gift of their very own for Christmas.
So this year I'm doing a Christmas shoebox... but for a dog in the kennels. I'll fill it with toys and treats and they will have something that is their very own. I'm hoping if I shop around that maybe I can get enough stuff for several and a few of them will benefit. :)
What could you do to help a dog in your local shelter?
Oh, I forgot to add... my Mum is also doing this too so that's at least another dog that's going to get a gift. :) |
