Mrs. Smiths Pies Does anyone buy Mrs. Smiths pies for Thanksgiving. I have been buying them for years. (Yes I am bad, I do not bake them from scratch). Well when I opened the boxes this year they were tiny. I mean teeny tiny. My mom checked her frezzer she had 2 pies from January 2008 frozen. Well my pies I bought last week were 27 oz. Hers from January were 37oz. Imagine all the people going to bake them tomorrow morning to serve 10 or more people. I had to laugh. How sad. Talk about cutting back. LOL:thumbdown |
Years ago Mrs. Smith's pies were huge. I've noticed them getting smaller and smaller every year. I can't imagine how they could make them even smaller this year and still call them a pie. At this point, I think they should be called tarts. :D |
wow!!! i buy those too ( |
Tarts So funny, I was thinking Pie for one. But I like tarts. It certainly looks like one.:thumbdown |
I forgot to mention My friend always put her Mrs. Smiths pie into a big ceramic pie plate to serve. She laughed when she tried it tonight and said well this won't work anymore. |

I used this recipe with braeburn apples and I added brown sugar to the topping. Crunch Top Apple Pie Recipe : Paula Deen : Food Network |
I tried making home made pie crust once for a strawberry pie--BLECH! It was more trouble than it was worth. I threw my 3 separate attempts away and went and bought a pie crust LOL |

1 Attachment(s) Look at the pie I made today. It is too pretty to eat if I do say so myself!!! (I did cheat and buy frozen crust) There is a great crust recipe I have that uses veg oil instead of shortening that is so easy! It came from my Mom's old black and red Betty Crocker recipe book. |
I haven't bought one of those pies......but I am upset because my meringue (?) didn't turn out on my chocolate cream pie....sigh....:( |

I'm making a Pumpkin Pie right now for tomorrow. I used a can of Pumpkin Pie filling I got last year on clearance after the holidays for .25 cents!! ;) I'm proud of that savings! |
Og you scared me We bought one this year I thought there was something wrong with them ! lol |
yea, the pies have definately shrunk. But I always bake my own for the holidays and feed people store ones when I have the whim. :) i have a recipe for a crust that tastes like sugar cookie and is DELICIOUS with pumpkin pie or apple...actually its pretty darn good with any kind if you're interested. Its a ton easier to make than traditional pie crust. |
My husband is our pie baker. Today he is making a pumpkin pie and an apple pie. I don't particularly like baking pies, but I like eating them :D I know a lot of things have shrunk in size lately. It would be fun/maddening to have a number of things to compare just to see how much we are getting ripped off  Happy Thanksgiving all! |
Smaller Sizing A lot of things have shrunk in size. Coffee used to be 16 oz now most are 11oz. Skippy peanut butter used to be 18oz that has been downsized. Cereal boxes are thinner. Ice cream half gallons have shrunk, OJ used to be 96oz notice last week they were less. So many things have remained the same price but packaging is smaller. But the shrinkage of the Mrs. Smiths pies really was large, down 10 oz in one year. I guess we aren't supposed to notice. :thumbdown:mad: |
Thats almost 30 percent :eek:Yikes! You may want to write the company, I would be interested in their response......or lack there of. |
Our local news had a story last week about how much everything is shrinking...the amount of cereal in boxes, crackers, etc. I always use Mrs. Smith's but didn't have to do the pies this year so hadn't noticed. Yikes. |
i made my own pies but i buy the mrs. smith pie crust that goes underneath the pie, it tastes really good. |
