Elementary school teacher Is anyone here an elementary school teacher? Do you like it? Do you feel like you get paid well for what you do? About how many hours a day do you work? |

They DO NOT get paid enough (even here in Canada where teachers make more than they do in the US). They work SO hard- they have to know 8 (here in canada there are 8 subjects in elementary school) curriculums for the particular grade they are teaching. THey work VERY long hours- my mother (she was an elementary school teacher- another reason i didn't become one) always came home after school and did "home work" with me on the dining room table until past 8 pm and was always marking or doing report cards on the weekend. I honestly feel it is a thankless job and God Bless the people who do it I'm a high school teacher- granted we dont' get paid enough either- I only have to know 2 curriculums and I get a paid 75 min spare (a block of time i dont' teach) elementary school teachers do not get that. Myabe i am a bit jaded because i'm the daughter of a retired elementary school teacher but I think i've truly seen what the job is like. |
My older sister is also a teacher so I don't have first hand experience, but she wanted to be an Elementary School teacher but does better as a High School teacher.... And she says Public School pays better... and they also paid to send her for Two Majors as well. but I will always stand by teachers dont get enough either way... |
My sister was a k-3 grage teacher for 30 years in Chicago and loved it, she did start to her burned out towards the end. She loved summer's off and she loved the kids. Her pension is great she makes more now than when she was working and is also subbing when she wants. Her dtr just moved to Nashville and is a 4th grade first year teacher and is having some adjustments to it but overall likes it. The pay is not great but benefits can be pretty good. |

oh wow. I didnt know Canada got paid more. Well i was just thinking about it cause ive always wanted to be a teacher when i was little but was always told they dont get paid enough, etc. Then i came across this article and started to think about it and it does make sense. I realized we didnt even pay that much time in class, we would always go to music class, the library etc so overall we were with the teacher for a couple hrs and i like the fact that ele. school gets out so early, like around 2pm, thats what makes me think i want to be one cause i know for sure i would stress out so much if i had to go home so late and not be with my babies, etc. And i also like the summers off thing. Im really thinking about it but i dunno. I was thinking maybe a 1st grade teacher cause the older kids would surely annoy me. They are too smart at that age and talk back lol This is the article: Article | The Teacher-Pay Myth but i dont know anyone who is actually a teacher so... |

Im in school right now getting my BS in childhood education. My mother in law has been in the board of ed for 20 years, she started as a 1st grade teacher and did that for 5 yrs and then switched positions. She said it was a lot of work and stressful, yes she had summers off but alot of it was spent preparing for the year ahead. my sister in law would have to help her grade test papers, she def took her job home. With that said teachers get paid 45,000 starting with no prior experience and just a BS, it continues to go up. right now she is a resource room teacher (she has 7 kids a day that need extra help) and she has FREE summers no lesson plans, out of work by 3 and has only 7 kids, is making over 80,000 a yr. Working for the BD of ED is a great choice but be wise in what job title you take. Im going for the BS in education and will be certified to teach by next yr but will not be a classroom teacher for me its just too much. hope this helps:) |
I'm not a teacher,(wish I had been one) Yorkies and Kids, that's my life, my family, mom, dad, grandmother, grandfather, all teachers, even my dad working at the University did not get paid enough for what he did, but here is the thing, teaching is the kind of thing that you do because you love it and for the rewards your students give you day by day, not because of the pay check or benefits, if that's what you are looking for, teaching is no the path to follow. On Tuesday here in Miami Dade County numerous cuts were signed for the school board, among them, pay cuts, 4 Charter schools will be closed, and many funds for programs had been reduced as well.Teachers are definitely not well paid! |
That was a great article by the way ;) |
I worked in an elementary school for 13 years as a paraprofessional. I served in the Media Center where we saw all of the students each week - served as a substitute teacher as both the "teacher" and aide in all grades prek - 5. I also served as the computer teacher (I acted as a TEACHER, sans teacher pay) for the last year I worked before I retired because of health problems. I can honestly say that elementary school teachers DO NOT get paid nearly enough. They should be some of the highest paid individuals in the country - they are responsible for shaping the minds and hearts of our future. What I concluded about elementary school teachers is: 1) they consider their jobs very important; 2) they love the hours - long summer vacations 3) they all feel underpaid. Many teachers teach for 20 - 30 years (sounds like a long time to someone in their late teens early 20's), retire and start getting retirement checks immediately, then embark on a new carreer in their early 50's having time to get a second retirement. Teachers last because they value their job, love the children and feel like they are making a difference. |
let me tell you the requirements are many, there are 3 state exams that you must take plus an internship that requires 300 hours and 2 workshops (school violence and child abuse) They will let you begin teaching with a BS but you do have a certain amount of time to get your masters. All those requirements for 45,000 a yr to start. I agree that you have to love children to do this job but we cant forget that its exactly that...a job. I may be out of the minority here but I chose to take this profession up because of my children, the summers/days off and the time we get out. Of course Im going to be great and try my best with the students but I chose education because of the time off and how it will benefit my children to have mommy home by 3:30 and home to enjoy summers with them. |
My sisterss soon to be ex-husband is a high school teacher in Queens. He teaches the honors classes and he really enjoys it. He does bring homework home every night and even on the weekends. He never works in the summer (lucky guy lol). The last time I checked, he was making 75 K. That was 2 years ago; so I don't know what he is currently making. |
