Thawing meat for humans. Is there a way to make thawing ground beef faster? I have some frozen ground beef for dinner and it's been on the counter for a couple hours and still rock hard. thanks |
hi, you can always thaw it out in the microwave, I do that i just do it 1/2 way then its enough to fry up :) |
you can also place it in cool water which helps, or just run cool water over it. You're nto supposed to use warm/hot water as it starts to cook the meat, and 1/2 cooked 1/2 raw meat is a huge germ hangout, but if you are going to use it immediately it will be getting cooked anyway! |
You should never thaw it on the counter; bacteria can grow too fast. The microwave is the fastest, and I found that with mine, I set if for 30 seconds on high, and break away the thawed part and put the rest in the microwave, I continue to do this until it's all thawed. Depending on your microwave you might want to vary you time between checking. High is the fastest, but because of hot spots, some parts will cook, while other spots remain frozen, and you want to avoid this. Another safe way is to do it with less power, for a longer period of time, but I found taking off the thawed and returning the rest is the best way for me. |
I usually put it in cool water to thaw..or take it out of the freezer and put it in the refrigerator the night before |
I put it in the refig the night before and If I need it sooner I thaw it in the microwave |

thanks for the suggestions and the bacteria reminder. i don't have a microwave. next time i will just pop it in the fridge the night before. |
Well it's probably too late now, but you can put it in a pan, over medium heat and cook it frozen taking off the bits that have thawed, and putting them aside until the whole thing is thawed. Can't really make patties out of this, but it will work for sauces and things like that. Takes longer than the microwave, but if it's an emergency it's worth it. |
