Previous Breastfeeders.... Advice Needed... Again! I can't remember who my "go to" was last time I had some questions on this subject but I could do with a little advice again. Amelia is 10months tomorrow, (how did that happen?), she will only take sips from a sippy cup and she won't really feed from a bottle either... she's got 5 teeth and just started biting when I'm nursing her! Any ideas on how to discourage this cuz at the minute I'm having all on to not cussing cuz it's REALLY painful! :( |
This is an indication it may be time to wean. They do take more from the sippy cup once they are weaned. Is she doing this at all feedings or just some? Once she did this, I would give her a couple of warnings, by saying no and removing the breast, and then if she bit again, I would give her the sippy cup, and see how it went at the next feeding. My youngest son was more interested in playing at the lunch meal, and this was more likely to occur at this time, so that's the meal, I eliminated first. His nighttime meal, he wouldn't do this, and that was the last to go. |
Well I nursed for 19 months and Chase only bit me maybe twice. I immediatly pulled him away and said no more. He was old enough to know that it was bad enough the was cut off! However, he was a bit older.... if she's already got five teeth, maybe pull her away or even I was told to sort of push your breast into their face a bit, not for a long time by anymeans but to get their attention without yelling out or pulling away which can hurt you more. I self weaned him, he started wanting to use the sippy cup, she's still pretty young, keep trying but I think if you are still willing to nurse her, let her nurse a bit more, but if you would really like to wean her, theres ways to prep for that :) |
First of all, WELL DONE for choosing the BEST for your baby, so few do these days! I've breastfed all four of mine and have just weaned my youngest off at 16 months old. I have been bitten numerous times! NOT NICE! I would yelp/scream in an exagerated way to let them know they had hurt me, then quickly detach(by pushing your little finger into the corner of the mouth) and say "NO BITING" in a stern voice! It has always worked for me although there may still be the odd ocasion now and then, just use the same technique. She is just testing out her chompers:D I wish you the best of luck! |
I have nursed all 6 of mine, and I am still nursing my 17 month old. I do not think it's a sign to wean at all, your little one is just testing the chompers. I have heard many things, some people have even said to tug a little piece of hair and say no. I just made the baby stop nursing and say "no bite!". Just do not laugh if the baby laughs at that reaction like my little sweet princess did  That just encourages it. She will still bite sometimes now, but its not intentional. It's only when she is dozing off and not realizing it. The last 4 of mine have not really even eaten much solids let alone drink much other than breast milk until they were around a year old. |
Things have changed since I've breast fed, and there was very little encouragement for it when I did it. So glad there is better information out there now. So ignore my advice. :D |
Ohh, all these people that have nursed over a year! People look act and look so surprised that I'm still nursing her but this is encouraging. :D I've noticed a pattern in when she is biting and it's towards the end of her feed when she's starting to loose interest so at the first sign of her slowing down I'm keeping careful watch on her so as soon as she stops her feed I can reposition her so she's just having a cuddle instead. If she does sneak in a little bite then I'm going to try the methods suggested here and see if they work for us. One person suggested to me to say "ouch" very loudly and all that achieved was to make her jump which made her bite harder. I'm sure we'll find the best solution for us soon or better still she will stop doing it. :) |

I breastfed my son till he was 10 months and found from about 9 months that he wanted to feed from me less and less..he had hardly ever been fed from a bottle so he went straight to a trainer cup..he basically weaned himself...I don't remember being bitten too often though..so I wish I could help a bit more on that one! I would think she is almost ready to be weaned off the breast;) |

It's a pain, (literally), to know what is best for her and me. :( |
